I wonder if I said anything five years ago in this thread, but my curiosity is not strong enough to waste time looking.

"If you use your beard for storage..." for things like extra food, chop sticks, tooth picks, bugs for extra protein. If you're really savvy you could get a tube of chapstick in there or a tire iron or two.....

Another approach ... This one will cost considerably more money but might have real benefits that cannot be weighed in dollars. Every so often, when you pull in to a town, go to the barber and get a shave. While there, ask him what you should know about this town. You might learn that Mrs Jones puts on a killer breakfast every Saturday morning (tomorrow). Costs $5. She doesn't put up a sign 'cause everybody knows. That red house. Just say I told you.

I actually enjoy shaving at the picnic table while camping on tour. It makes you feel clean and refreshed when a shower is not available. I'll wet my hair and face down with warm water heated by the stove and that provides the illusion that one has taken a shower. A Bic razor weighs just a few grams. Soap for shaving cream.

I can usually go about 3 or 4 days without shaving before people start squinting at me and asking "Are you trying to grow a mustache?" 3 or 4 weeks and I look like the older brother in "Napoleon Dynamite". No matter how long I leave it, I get all the scruffbag and none of the macho. Reluctantly then, I shave fairly regularly even on tour. I'm not a fan of Bic disposables though so carry my Merkel and shave in the shower, which tends to happen in the evenings.

Then I change into my tux and prepare a martini. I'm not a barbarian after all.
