Zero Friction Cycling is doing real world testing of chains, lube, and wear. Though I get 4k to 5k kilometres from my chains I still want to reduce wear and friction. This is what he recommends for new chains, and I have started following this prep for new chains. . Prep method starts at 7:12 in the video.
When using this prep, the amount of metal particles removed from the chain after only 100 km is alarming, the solvent will be black with grit that sticks to a magnet so it is not road grime. This convinced me do the 100 km break-in for oxidation, ultrasonic cleaning with spirits, and re-lube.
