Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is steel real ? I dont know but i'm about to find out. *****Initial impressions page4

Just received my frame today from Waterford. It's a Gunnar roadie. Just finished assembling and installing everything. Tommorrow i'll take it out for a spin. Its a fairly conservative build up. I wanted a bike I could ride distances more comfortably. I love my CAAD9 to death as well but I feel this will be a good change of pace. No garage pic yet as I have not rode it yet but heres some snaps from my work area.

Complete bike

Crank

RD

Ultegra 6700 Cassette and Chain

Asking if steel's real, and running it along with some carbon parts was unexpected...

The paint finish looks very nice.

this will definitely be a nice second bike for you.

recently i broke the chain on my Ti Merlin before having to do an 80 mile ride, and not having another 10-sp chain on hand, i took my alu bianchi, which is set up pretty aggressively, that thing beat me to hell over 80 miles. the next weekend i rode a century on the Merlin, and the ride comfort increase was unquestionable.

if you have a race oriented alu bike, steel or Ti is a good thing to have in your stable as well, good luck with it!

Same thoughts here. Can steel be real with a carbon fork????

Still, should be a very cool ride. A nice change of pace.

Nice. I love gunnar and wateford bikes.
I own bikes made from CF, aluminum, and steel. They are all nice in their own way. Quality of construction matters more than anything.

This fellow SR-22 owner welcomes you to the club. We'll have to get 'show us your Waterford' thread going if one doesn't already exist.

Those Gunnar frames are quite nice. I just built up a Boron steel Bianchi last week and took it for it's first ride yesterday. It's a much different ride than my carbon framed bike. Very smooth and mine is even a little stiff, but you can feel the road where my carbon bike you can't. I think it rides nicer than the carbon bike, but I will say the carbon bike takes off when you step on the pedals. More so than the steel bike.

"The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery.
You must learn its riddle.
You must learn its discipline.
For no one - no one in this world can you trust.
Not men, not women, not beasts.
[Steel] This you can trust.

Did they form the shape of that cutout pointing in between
those open leg-like seat stays like "that" on purpose?

That's a beautifully built frame. Great looking crafstmanship.

And, no, steel is made up. Once you realize that bike frame isn't there you'll fall down.

Irrespective of all the nonsense that is talked about what material rides best, I like the aesthetics of steel - and Ti, for that matter. No carbon or alu frame has quite the same cleanliness of line.

I've been very pleased with my Gunnar Sport. I have Roval SL (CX) wheels and don't worry about where my ride takes me. The bike can take it.

To some extend I agree. But I think carbon, often, has its own aesthetic which is also very nice.

What happened to to 6282 6283? It looks really nice. Too bad they started making Rival in Carbon. I have the first gen which is all alloy. Is this 853 or Columbus?
