Converting MTB to Touring...shifter problems!

I guess I am not following. My original MTB stem would not fit my road bike bars. So I had to get a stem that would. The stem I have now is not tall enough to mount my shifters vertically on the neck of the stem. (I think this is what you are talking about mounting them?) My original MTB brakes will not fit on the road bike bar either.

yea there is that .. tube on road bars is 15/16" not 7/8" Hubbub thing goes in the open end of road-drop bars and adds a section that is 7/8" (but you don't like it.. )
you might either accept cheap steel road bars , "gmc denali" used grip shifters right by the stem on the bars..
or seek out expensive ones from Germany they also separate in the center so grip shifter , the Rohloff one, can be top center ..
right along side the stem clamp.. But of course use a lot better materials and manufacturing,
than the 'Denali' did...
Using 22.2 / 7/8" tube, then you add to the diameter where your brake lever goes..

Just get some used Sora-ish 3x7 brifters. Do you have a bike co-op in your area? They probably have at least some '90s-vintage 3x7 road goodies around.

I turned a pretty solid hybrid into a bullet proof touring bike several years ago with a trekking bar. The problem was I could never find a truly comfortable position on it. It always seemed too close or too far away. I ended up cutting about 3" off both ends of my old flat bar and adding a couple of angled bar extenders. With some bar tape on the extenders I felt like I was on the hoods of my drop bar touring bike and felt very comfortable when out if the saddle or just grinding. Brakes and shifters always worked great and didn't need replacement. I toured about a month with this setup and never felt uncomfortable. Getting the stem reach right is important though, more so than on drop bars in my opinion.
It you definitely want drop bars there are drop bar extenders or some pretty cheap combo brake levers available. I ordered some $38 3X7 ones and want to put em on a Klein Performance with a few changes in the gearing. (the standard gearing is not nearly low enough for me).

I think I am just going to go with the trekking bar route and see how it feels.

i'm on my 2nd flat-to-drop-bar conversion now and for both i went to barend friction shifters. super easy, super reliable, super functional. i had to modify the one on my 1x10 to reach all the gears, but that was easy too. plus, if break a cable on a trip somewhere, it'll be super easy to get a replacement and switch it out on the side of the road

You might check with these folks. Hard to tell how much they stock old parts, but worth asking.
