I was referring to more major manufacturers and their production. Obviously there would be greater savings there. Anyone going to a custom builder and paying bigger bucks would get the full Monty I would think. A bit extra tubing cost is probably a minor part of the whole package. Of course, not being knowledgeable, I could be way off on that. Kinda nice though that these more modesty priced frames are well loved.
I may be able to do a bit of comparison in the future. I have a Trek 412 Ishiwata 022 in the lineup. It has very similar geometry to my full 531 83 Trek 700. I’m betting there won’t be a great difference, but that is part of the fun.

Just picked up a late Carlton supercourse with butted main triangle in 531. It's pretty darn light and an excellent bike. I would have believed it were full 531 if I didn't already know better. I love the bike
