Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

200 is the lowest I want to be. 205 is my sweet spot. A few days ago I clocked in at 207.5, NBD.

Central Park, and the journey to-and-from was where I did most of my cycling. CP was the epicenter of the 70s bicycle renaissance and it was quite the social scene. We would ride a few laps then stop to hang out at the fountain and the 72 St transverse flirting with the girls, then back to more laps, and rinse and repeat. Mostly recreational stuff, in the 70s we used to demean the rare guys you'd see all serious and kitted up.

I bought a townie helmet today, to use in the city, with the newish city bike program. First helmet I have ever had rated to European standards. They read very much like the Virginia Tech standards. I guess I should now look up the CPSC standards, and compare.
Edit: Pretty close.

I grew up riding on the mean streets of Arendtsville. 20 blocks would have taken you past the next town over. So, nobody rode to school because we either lived within < 0.5 miles, or live far enough away that you rode the schoolbus.

Nope. The guys I knew who had Stingrays had single speeds or knockoff bikes with twist shift 3 speeds. I had an "English" 3 speed.

We rented a car and paid a guy to go with us and drive the rental car back to L.A. He needed money and it was a lot cheaper to pay him than to drop the car in Oregon.
We borrowed a roof rack from our club and I remember the bikes were covered in smashed bugs when we got to Florence. Bees and other bugs in my cogs and everywhere.

Florence was nice. Very quiet and we spent one night there before we hit the road and sent the driver home.

Luckily I never got arrested on the Oregon Coast. My friend came close once in Manzanita. We left the little bar there to get a some beers for after-hours, both jumped on his Yamaha XS 1100 and he kinda lit it up a bit, which instantly caught the attention of the only police car in town. Unbelievably the man let us get back on the bike. We aborted out beer run but found some rotgut whiskey in the cabinet in the house we were staying in. His GF was surprised we got back that night as apparently that cop was typically a bit of an ******* to anyone he doesn't know personally. She used to live in that house as a yute, but her family moved to the big city when she was a tween, retaining the Manzanita beach house for vacations.

Montrose. I remember the name but nothing more. And I wouldn’t have remembered the name had you not mentioned it.
