Popup doesn't appear for me. I have the Premium version. MacBook Pro/Chrome browser. I've been creating and editing a lot of routes recently as I'm planning my next trip.

could be a browser issue then from the sounds of things.
not the first time that this sort of thing happens, once in a blue moon I hit weirdness with something and after a minute or 5 or 10, I remember, "oh yeah, try another browser" and it sometimes sorts out the issue.

and Ive never even used rwgps really, so plead complete innocence with it.

It is gone - -
I suspect it was a beta test that was supposed to be in beta mode,
but somehow it went live by mistake.

Popups have become ubiquitous - in almost every website.
Sometimes you get popups in popups.
Often with revenue or redirect as a goal.
But most people hate 'em and do their best to ignore them.

*FYI
I intentionally feed my advert "profile" fake stuff.
For ex. - that I have a private pilot, buy yachts, and use an extra large bra.
In the spirit of Edward Abbey.

I never saw it, but also didn't try too hard to find it.

Not sure in this situation, but one technique that also gets done is A-B testing on a live site. You subject some subset of the population (A) to your new change and then compare the response to the other population without the change (B). So perhaps it was there by mistake but there are also scenarios where feature trials are intentional.

Well, if it was intentional and I was in the subset - -
they sure got an earful from me.

One time I had a Disney ad take over my phone in the middle of a conversation.
Do they really think you are going to buy when they irritate you like that?

Anyhoo, thanks much. - - J

I imagine you're an outlier. The addition of a button on the route viewing page of the website is likely uneventful for most users.

You should be happy now, the button seems to be deactivated, as I'm not getting it today.

You may want to avoid clicking on the Explore tab however, as that map has a button that appears upon panning or zooming, saying "Search this area"

It would be better to focus on the things on RWGPS you don't like than talking about unrelated fanciful silly examples. That is, these silly examples suggests the real things you are complaining about aren't that bad (it makes you look like you are overreacting).

"You can't please everybody." You have no idea how many people like (or dislike) the new features.

Nope, doesn't happen to me. Nothing I do brings it up, edit, whatever. I love the software and all the improvements over the years. I have hundreds of routes in my library. My wife and I did a solo tour of the Czech Republic, relying entirely on RWGPS for route planning. Didn't even take paper maps, didn't need them. Of course it took me a while working up 600k of road routes complete with accommodations.

With multiple route failures (described here in this thread - Why I don't trust route choices from Ride With GPS) - I find it useful to sanity check with the heat maps to double check if other cyclists have come through a similar route. It may not be as big of an issue if your world is New Jersey but I found in less populated areas it would pick routes that included (a) private roads (b) misleading assumption that if the road type was "unknown" it would be paved (c) one or two cases of a road not existing. In those less populated parts of the US, I would do as well with a state highway map e.g. South Dakota. However, otherwise it is a useful tool including for me in more urban areas and including the heat map as a cross-check.

I often check google street view in questionable areas. I also consult forest service maps (and NFS websites to check on road closures from logging operations, seasonal closures, etc), county GIS maps sometimes help determine private road status.

As a backup in case both phones die I copy the cue sheet from RWGPS, paste it into a text editor and add my own notes, then print that out. I ride on a lot of unnamed roads/trails so the RWGPS instruction will just be "2.7 mi slight right", so I put in a description and the approximate heading of the path I'm turning onto just to reassure myself I'm on the right road, so my new instruction will be something like "2.7 mi slight right doubletrack 300°"

When it comes to finding a campsite I'll consult the maps for legal camping areas and put notes in for that also. On my last trip I was going to camp in a small pocket of campable land so I looked it up on the State Trust Land site, used a half mile buffer on either side just to make sure and then entered a note for it - "Camp one to 2.5 miles past Salome Road"

There are many occasions where I have to switch from "Follow Roads" to "Draw Lines" to map passages.

Most of the time you can choose the "USGS Scans" (Not USGS Topo) at the bottom of the map toggle.
Many times it will let you route on seasonal closures - like in Yellowstone - but not always. Why so??

I like to plan trips when roads are closed in Yosemite or Yellowstone or the Canadian Rockies.
You know - plan the route in the winter before you head out?
So, although I know their rationale for blocking it, I'm frustrated by this, too.
Maybe a pop-up with the warning, "Route Seasonally Closed - Do you want to continue?"

In my area, the OSM basemaps seem to be the best equipped for auto-routing. Not so much for seasonal roads but for smaller singletrack trails and jeep roads.

RWGPS is getting better about that kinda thing as time goes on. It used to be so roadie-centric that any route in the dirt would be nothing but "Draw Lines".

I don't have seasonal roads here. Other routing difficulties:

OSM Cycle sometimes has roads, paths, or parking lot shortcuts that the google maps don't show. I'll have to try the topo maps sometime.

One way street sidewalks, taking a "no left turn", etc: Try temporarily switching to "Walking" instead of "Cycling" on the Routing pulldown.

What road is this route using? The map style "RWGPS Cycle" shows road names overlaid on the route line. google maps covers the road names with the red route line.

For Routes or Rides, searching my history:

Show on Map

Finding an old route of mine, or just selecting from all my routes that take an interesting road that I want to repeat. This is on Windows, and I have the paid rwgps plan -- does "show on map" work for free accounts?

Click Routes on the main page. It shows a list of recent routes. At the top right, click "Show on map"

Now it shows a local map with green circles with counts of how many of my routes start there.

Now pan and zoom the map to find a road that I've included on routes before.
Click on the road on the map.

I get a list of every route of mine that passes through that point!
Click a route on the list and it's shown on the map in red. There's also a link to the original route page.

Rides work essentially the same way.

Well, trusting any techie map product for a bicycle ride is a great way to get an unplanned extra long ride in (ask me how I know....).

They keep coming up with all these new Edsels - most of which you don't really need or want.
And, quite often, you can't choose whether you use them or not.

When you send in a help ticket, you get a rah-rah speech about how great it is -

And if you say - "In the old days, you just adjusted a knob." - they get mad.

If I want to see other rides in the area, I know where to look.
At the very least, have it a a drop-down choice -
Not floating in the middle of an already small map no matter where you move it.

It may be time to look elsewhere - which means lots of work exporting files.
If I go, I will never return.
But I really, really hate floating pop-ups - especially when I am a Premium subscriber.
My favorite "feature" while mapping a route is when it constantly puts me down side-streets, crossing highways just to cross back, taking off ramps just to take the on ramps, circuitously winding around my intended route in senseless ways... Though to be fair, it's kinda therapeutic to get it set just right and then go back and remove all the control points. Occasionally my saved routes will change ever so slightly without input from me.
I think I understand the rationale, safety in avoiding busy roads (maybe?), but sometimes the highways are just nice to ride.😅

Here in Oregon, Hwy101 is pretty nice in lots of places, Hwys 6, 26, 30, and 35 are also quite scenic and MUCH safer than some of the back roads. Not in city limits, but the spaces between cities.😁

Using the “draw line” option is one way (you can make go wherever you want).

Choosing another map (OSM if using Google or vice-versa) might be another way.
