fashion was invented for two reasons... in the short term, it is designed to get your money.
In the long term, it is designed to make you look ridiculous. (imho, etc)

It was a weird time for fashion. I've got a Raleigh catalog with what might have been one of the most outrageous wardrobe choices I've seen in bike marketing materials...



Considering how clean the guy's pants legs are, I wonder if that chain is absolutely devoid of lube?

I had this exact question. I have heard of the technique of "setting" a screwdriver into the slot by popping it with a light hammer blow to ensure it's square in the channel to avoid camming out during removal, but not where one uses that to increase tightening torque.
