Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fork flex makes sense

Hi,

I'm in the process of buying a Checkpoint ALR-5. I got the techs to look into that shudder problem. They seemed to be familiar with it. Hm.
By the way, shudder had nothing to do with bumps. It was always occurring on a smooth road, quite reproducible.
Here's how I believe fork flex works: You hit the brake hard. The fork flexes. That slows down the wheel for a split of a second. The brake then works more effectively which accentuates the effect. Next, the rest of the bikes exerts its momentum on this process and breaks through the slowing down process. End of cycle. A new cycle begins.
That, however, doesn't explain the lack of relief if somebody changed their fork. That fork, though, may have a similar problem, though.
I could also imagine that some combination of rotor and pad just has too much of an initial grip which causes any fork to bend, see above.

If the techs can't find a convincing fix, I won't but that bike, however, that'd make me sad.
