Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The reputation of Time frames adds a bit of hot to compensate.

Hard to love the SMP saddles in my mind. They just don't look "hot." They look more like "dork."

But, if you're riding ultra-distance, then I am not the guy to critique.

Areo bars make sense for the kind of riding you do, from a practical perspective, but this thread is not about practical. On a TT bike specifically designed for use with areo bars, opinions might be different. On a top-quality road machine, it's kind of like a luggage rack on a Ferrari.

Jeez, that brick connecting the aerobars to the handlebars is chunky! It may cancel out the "aero" effect.

Edit: That saddle is homely also.

I built this up about a week ago to replace my all-around / long-distance / ultra-endurance bike that was hit by a car (with me on it ). It's marketed by Time as a climbing bike, but the geometry works very well for long-distance / ultra-distance. The bike was built up from a frameset (purchased new from Time), and I'm really happy with the results. I know some folks will be turned off by the aerobars, and that's fine (I've got a thick skin ). It took me a while to warm up to aerobars, but for long-distance and ultra-distance they are a necessity.

Here's the spec:
- Time Alpe D'Huez framset (size small)
- Bontrager Aeolus RSL 37v wheelset
- Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speed groupset
- Pro PLT Ergon carbon handlebar
- Deda Elementi Superbox DCR stem (100mm)
- Deda Elementi Superleggero 0 degree carbon seatpost
- Speedplay Zero pedals
- Profile Design 43 ASC carbon extensions / Profile Design Nesonic bracket
- K-Edge Wahoo gravity top cap computer mount
Many long distance gravel racers and long distance bike packers have aero bars for different reasons. The first group is for speed and more hand/body positions. For the packers, it’s for hand/body and headwinds. Do your own thing - hot or not or in between. Frankly who cares? But then, I am more of a form and function guy with a touch of aesthetics

Re-read the intro to this thread, and you will understand why the comments are what they are. No one cares whether or not anyone uses aero bars when they ride, but when you post a bike in this thread it’s supposed to be staged correctly, accessories off etc. We want to see the bike, just the bike.

Along with what bam said, this is the thread of unreasonable bike criticism, based on appearances alone, with the "hot" standard in line with the bikes of the pro peloton. The Rules (you know the ones) may be applicable. A sense of humor about it all is recommended. It ain't personal.

Just found this old thread. Its nice to see just what people are ridding. I really like your color combination. Especially when allot of the newer or replacement components are now just anodized black instead of polished or chrome. I will consider this color combo for a Mixte rebuild coming up... Thanks for posting.

With that in mind, none of my bikes will qualify, and I’m ok with that. Have fun with it though.

Peter calls it the Good 'n' Plenty bike. I loved the baby pink, but would have preferred plain old polished Al components for the rebuild.

That's pretty warm...
- High-quality machine - check
- Cranks level - check
- Stems aligned - check
- Biggie smalls - check
- No bottles or bags - check
- Stems and tire labels aligned - check

The front and rear light/radar mounts detract a little bit. Learning against the garage door would look a little better than the stand. True hotness demands a slammed stem.

All that said, it's a nice bike!

No question about the slammed stem being really hot, but age makes that difficult. It's kind of like looking good but having ED.

Do you want it to look hot, or do you want to actually be able to ride it? These are the tough choices we have to make.

Hot. would look better with the stem slammed, only because the weird trek spacer, if the Madone SLR cockpit was compatible that would help.

As hot and as uncomfortable as possible, I always say.

If discomfort in your position is costing you power, the aero advantage might not not be making up for it. Fast is hot, too.

I love how aerobars look... on tri bikes. You have a good reason for this of course, but... like a push-bar on a Ferrari.

Edit: I wrote that before I read the other Ferrari comment.

I've been fortunate to have above-average spinal flexibility (always have). At 55, I can still bend at the waist and put my palms flat on the floor. I'm not sure how much longer that will last, but I make an effort to keep that flexibility intact. The only change I've made to my road bike setup compared with my race bikes from 20 years ago is a 10mm shorter stem.

Unfortunately, I’ve dealt with a herniated disc at L4-L5 for 30 years. I can only bend to about mid-shin with palms flat.

Yeah. That's gonna need a few stem spacers
