Need 10 posts

Thank you for understanding. The 5-post and 10-post restrictions were improvised as an effective means of keeping the forum from being overrun by spammers and trolls, who would quickly make this entire forum a malicious wasteland of ads, schemes, gimmicks, porn and other unpleasantries. The fact that spammers are not more conspicuous on these forums is due not only to these restrictions, but to the efforts of the unpaid, volunteer mod staff. This is not our "job", the mod staff is just a small group of regular members giving up their personal free time to help keep these forums an enjoyable place for all to visit.
.
.
This site is a pleasure to visit.
And for someone new here, reading and meeting new people, creating the first 10 posts shouldn't take long.

I'm getting
"You are not allowed to post URLs until you have at least 10 posts"
but my post doesn't have any URLs at all. I took out the HTML list, removed the trailing colon from my "include:" list preface, checked the source to make sure that there are no HTML tags and yet it *still* won't post.
Any hints? Is posting just totally broken for new users?

I tried quoting the text here and it wouldn't post either, so that gave me a hint that it was something about the content. After *much* trial and error, I finally figured out that embedded number signs (referencing numbers 2 & 3 on my list) were what was triggering some overly picky parser. Not the best new user experience, but I did manage to get my question posted after much struggling.

- Quote the actual problematic snippet of text in the error message, so that users at least have a hint as to what the problem is. "numbersign" == URL is particularly inscrutable to someone who has just registered (and probably not much less so for experienced non-admin users).
- Whitelist digits (or even just a single digit) from the hashtag functionality. Is [numbersign]2 ever actually a hashtag? I doubt it.
p.s. The first "numbersign", in symbolic form caused this not to post the first time around. Could I also suggest that single punctuation characters get added to the white list.
pps the quoted number sign is also a problem

***RETIRED*** Do Not Contact
Not to disagree with a Jedi, but, as a software engineer, I see at least two possible improvements:

This is to prevent spammers, something we had a lot of in the past.
Just hang out for a couple days, I think you are allowed only 5 posts a day until you have 10 as well.
Introduce yourself, comment on what a cool bike that is or whatever and you'll be in like Flynn.
You two have four and six more posts respectively. It will be the coolest.
And welcome to Bike Forums

We appreciate those members who are thoughtful enough to appreciate our services, and thank you for helping to spread the realities of internet forums to all members. We deeply regret that the 10 post restriction is an inconvenience to new members. But until such time as technology can devise some sort of magical software that can screen out malicious posts from benign ones, some minor concessions will have to be made. If there was a better way we would surely employ it. Thanks for understanding.

It does, as does closing a thread that's more than a year old mainly replied to by a now-banned member.

So far they only still have 2 posts and the thread has 2 banned members (IB staff too)?
Oh well. Hopefully the OP will return and enjoy the scenery.

I still wonder how many newb's, when following moderator instructions to simply find some existing posts to comment on, wonder why they see their post count stay the same if they post in The Lounge. I can imagine them getting frustrated, leaving and not coming back.
Look at all the moderator instructions on this thread - none mention that a whole section of Bike Forum participation does not count towards 10 posts. Why not start out this new decade by getting rid of this ridiculous policy, or start pointing it out on communications to newbies ?

The latter part is what I was talking about, I understand the need for the 10 post rule. If you can make all BF sections count towards the 10 it would certainly be less confusing. Does anyone see any downside ? . Thanks Joel !

The reason they don't count is because they are OFF-TOPIC (i.e. Foo and other subforums that are not about bikes).

Maybe I need new glasses, but I'm actually having trouble where the site states you need 10 posts until you can post a photo. Is it simply the message you get when you attempt to post and it's rejected?

And the parent company is an internet forum hosting site wanting to draw as many eyes to the site as possible to be a better draw for advertisers. From a previous post in C&V:
So here a 2 reasons to count all posts the same
1) avoid confusion to new members trying to get to 10 posts
2) the situation described above where a veteran poster is perceived negatively because of low post count
At least one member unterhausen agrees this is old guideline really makes no sense Newbie Intolerant...
I was encouraged @IBJoel said this guideline could be amended. Can you give me a reason why it shouldn't be ?
I remember seeing here Foo is the 3rd or 4th most viewed forum behind C&V, Road & maybe General. I thought everyone checked in with the humorous threads like funny gif's, videos and photos (2 million + views). There are a lot of music and photography threads....just a cool place for cyclists to talk about things other than cycling & bikes.
As mentioned before, just the fact that it causes confusion to new members trying to hit 10 posts, and the fact that it draws a lot of viewers to Bike Forums (a good thing right?) I can't see the reason to continue to not count posts. Is there a fear that BF will be over-run with comedians, photographers & musicians? One well-respected Foo poster of photos & music who pretty much stays in Foo was "put down" in a non foo thread post for only having 104 or so posts and being a member since the early 2000's, so how could her opinion or comment have merit.
