The Klein and the Funk are pretty good finds. Grab a barely used road bike with Ultegra bits off of CL, put all the parts on the Klein and you've got a beautiful bike whose weight would be on par with a $3000 new road bike. Sure no disc brakes and maybe only 18-20 speeds, but that's no big deal to many people.

^^^ That presupposes the knowledge and ability to find and utilize "a barely used road bike with Ultegra bits" having a frame noticeably inferior to the 30ish year old Klein.

Doesn't have to be noticeably inferior, just one that's similar but not as cool. Turn of the century Trek 2300 for instance, can often be found for $400-500

I'm guessing these come from a recycling/repurposed area? Most landfills have recyclers that pay to scavenge the materials before they get dumped.

i've sold some of the complete bikes to people who need a cheap ride. i want to properly rebuild the 1990 specialized. i ride the kona. the klein will have to be sold due to it being a little too big for me. the Funk, trying to get info on it. no real response from my inquiries here, and the company is pretty silent.

i wouldn't say i'm scavenging, but i do look while i'm there.

no, just my town's transfer station "(meaning eventually different groups come in to clean out the different recyclable: cardboard, clothing, metal, electronics, etc). if i see something interesting, i will take it home to check it out. don't know when the whole section will be gone. can always take it back.

as a data point, just sold the Raleigh for $550. the perfect buyer for this original unrestored bike, he drove 600 miles round trip to pick it up (rather than my shipping it, thank god). it was his first bike, paid $130 for it new back then. definitely an emotional purchase.

Bike shop POV about recycling old bikes:

Hey! I found this bike by the side of the road / in a dumpster / at the transfer station. I just want to get it going and make sure it's safe, but I don't want to put a lot of money into it - how much to fix it up just so it's rideable?

$200 (tires, tubes, cables, heavy tune, and this doesn't include when spokes start popping as you try to get the steel rims, flaking chrome, back into some kind of shape)

What?!? I'm not going to put that kind of money into it!!!

(back to the side of the road)

....

Hey, I found this bike by the side of the road...

Don't get discouraged!

You are doing a great thing here. Townsfolk here in New Hampshire came to blows over our recycle center so now we are restricted "per order of the Selectmen" to stay out of the piles.

Use the bikes to learn, do good deeds, and maybe make a few bucks.

BTW, may I come to your town? I am having serious withdrawals seeing this!

second data point: don't want to count my chickens before they are hatched, but have a commitment from the UK for the FUNK frame+ for $900 plus shipping.

still waiting for that perfect buyer for the GMC! however, did sell my mid-90's Bianchi Forza to a area Bianchi fanatic. went to a good home. so, three sold in a month, which is great progress for me. frees up space.

Straight blade carbon. Looks like whoever removed the race chipped it up.

Maybe good for flipping if you make it clear to potential buyers that you don’t know its history. Used carbon fork with unknown provenance that was thrown out = kinda sketchy.

sold the dump pick Raleigh Supercourse for $550. someone drove up from PA to grab it. thankfully, so i didn't have to ship it. still advertising the complete Bottecchia. do you think it would be an easier and equally valued sale to strip it down to its frame? it would be a lot easier to ship.

this frame made its way back to the dump. with it being unknown, and too many other projects, didn't have time for it.
