I'm with the perspective, if you are competent mechanically, inspect for safety, do minor adjustments, and test ride the bike. A refurbish can take a long time, and what if one puts a lot into the bike only to find out they don't like the ride? Ya, sometimes a refurbish is the end in itself, but if you think you'll want to ride the bike a lot, a test ride may help with decisions during a refurbish.
