Today I learned that 16 degrees F feels quite warm on the way home, once one survives -6 degrees F on the way in! Thank goodness the winds weren't too bad.

Today was great! Despite a bit of rain, I saw more commuters out there than any day since October.

In a nutshell, it was wet but hey, I live in Portland. It rains 8 months out the year here so it's expected. I can't lie though, it was dry all day til my last break at 4 so I was hoping it would of stopped by 6 but nope, so I rode in the rain.

I only ride 1.2 miles next to traffic going 35-40 then it's all bike boulevard/greenway all the way home. It's a mellow ride thru residential blocks.

ride rome:

27F
constant ***hole 37 mph headwinds
black ice
avg speed = a generous 12 mph

this wind crap is the bane of my existence.

Fantastic ride in this morning on the bike path. Was completely prepped for it with my winter bike, my gore tex shoe covers and studded snow tires. There were places where the melting snow had become a foot deep of water, places where the slush/ice was the consistency of mashed potatoes and spots of chunky frozen ice with a glaze of water. Only had to put my foot down once on the ride in, which took a good ten minutes longer than usual.

The ride home was epic. A steady headwind of about 17 mph with gusts to 35. Temperature down to about 25 F made for frozen black ice combined with sheets of ice over what earlier would have been a deep puddle of water. Was warned by one of the few cyclists I saw that he had just had a fall on the ice. I also saw one other cyclist dismount and just start walking. I managed to ride virtually all of it but I hit one stretch of chunky ice a little too fast and had an almost throw down but caught myself in time.

The ride was slow but really fun.

25F and more 20+ mph winds, and some flurries this morning

i think my wool shirt and sleeveless jersey will carry me down to 20F

seems to be the perfect combo for minimal sweat

Cold commute this morning with temps in the mid-20s F. The TV forecasters were a little off on their reports or the temperatures dropped a bunch after I watched the weather at 5:20 am, when they said temps were about 30 F. I didn't wear my warmest gloves, which I usually reserve for temps below 30, so my hands were cold all the way to work. I knew it was colder than I expected because my water bottle started freezing as well. This week has turned out to be one of my coldest commuting weeks of the winter. Monday morning tied my coldest commuting day at 18 F, and every morning commute has been below 30, with afternoon rides in the 40s.

Large areas of ice this morning from yesterdays snow melt and heavy rains. 23degF, moderate winds, a pleasant commute overall.

60 degrees and sunny with a breeze from the NE as I rode in this morning, first time since Tuesday of last week for a number of reasons. Going to be about 80 on the way home. Gotta love South Florida for the commutes....

My morning commutes yesterday and today sucked. Both days temps around freezing and a headwind of ~20mph gusting to 30. Ugh. Today I just have up and resigned myself to a steady10 mph pace. Despite that, there were places where I can usually coast down little'hills' at 15+ mph, where this morning i had to pedal to maintain 8-10.

What’s worse is yesterday, my wife and I played switcheroo with the baby so she could go out in the evening, so she came by my office at the end of the day in the car, and I had to drive home with son and bike in car. IOW, suffered the pain of the headwind, but didn’t get to reap the rewards of the tailwind. At least tonight I get to ride home with the wind at my back!

-5C/23F with up to 40mph winds.

coldest day so far.

seems that my XC ski gloves aren't good enough for the wind (but the leather palms are nice for riding) ...

plus two weather advisories:

Description: Snow/Ice Es trittörtlich leichter Schneefall mit Neuschneemengen bis 3 cm, in Staulagen bis 5 cm in 6 Stunden auf. Dabei kann es im Laufe der Abend- und Nachtstunden auch in den Niederungen glatt werden. (Light snowfall of up to 2 inches in the next 6 hours.)

Description: Wind Es treten zeitweise Windböen mit Geschwindigkeiten bis 60 km/h (17 m/s, 33 kn, Bft 7) auf. (Wind with speed up to roughly 40 mph.)

Another great ride to work this morning. About 62 degrees with no real wind, ran into my pal Gary about two miles from the house and stopped and chatted with him for a few minutes. Gary rides for fitness before work, I ride to and from work, but the effect is the same, we both ride most mornings. Weather was wonderful, traffic was light and the ride was a fast one today. Good day to be alive....

Nashville was fantastic this morning. We had lots of rain overnight, so the streets were wet. Otherwise, clearing skies and 48F.
It was too good to waste so I jumped off the MTA for an extra 5 miles this morning.

I haven't been on the bike since last Wednesday and today was the only day I could ride - I was determined. Unfortunately, we've been under a winter weather advisory since last night, but I rode anyway - 32F with misty rain and fog. Overnight we got sleet and freezing rain, about 1/4" of ice still on the trail. If ever there was a test of studded tires, this was it! I dropped the air pressure about 10lbs and the only scary parts were crossing streets - and I have to admit I did go down once - no damage to me or the bike. It's supposed to get up to 40F this afternoon and I expect that between the warmer temps and occasional rain all will be mostly clear.

My workmates don't even ask me questions any more, they all think I'm totally nuts... which is fine with me!

we got a couple inches of snow last night. heading up clark street in rogers park i stop at a red light and a girl waiting at the bus stop adjacent shouts out to me "you're hard core man, solid work". she looked pretty "hipstery" so i took it as a genuine compliment from a fellow rider who was forced on to the bus because of the snow.

i love getting the random stranger shout-out for being a cycling bad-ass.

Beautiful day for a ride. I have a race tomorrow and I rode the race bike with newly mounted tubulars to test my glue job. So far so good.

well, to be fair, i've only been called a hipster in a negative sense (as in people making fun on my handmade italian boots).

Beatnik? No, Herb Caen coined that one as a derogatory put-down. Hippie? No, same author, same intent. What's the next addition to our lexicon?

My commute was 31 degrees this morning. I could hardly move; felt like Bib the Michelin Man. Took ten minutes longer than average.

I wear Italian made Chelsea boots as well (not on the bike), but hardly anyone ever calls me "Mod." Faves are a pair of Giorgio Brutini in black snakeskin. Don't step on those shoes!
