I am 24 and have never owned a car, I bike everywhere. It can certainly be done. I lost count of my mileage a long time ago, though I cycle in my spare time as well.
It can be a little rough in towns/cities that aren't bike-friendly, but it isn't horrible. A lot of cities have good bike lanes and such, there should be a cycling organization in your town that can tell you more.
