I have this problem. Wearing soft wool or cotton usually alleviates the problem. If I'm wearing anything synthetic it HAS TO BE FORM FITTING. Or else I get bloody nips.
And now everybody knows.
My summer garb is usually a tight sleeveless gym shirt with a loose fitting Columbia adventure longsleeve over it. The tight fitting shirt helps sweat form smaller beads and the long loose fitting shirt acts a wick and evaporator. This works even in hot humid FL summers! It also completely covers me from the sun and I don't have to use sunscreen anywhere on my upper body except face and neck. I'm a redhead and very aware of the dangers the sun poses.

I can't believe this thread has got this far without a Seinfeld reference! I don't even watch TV but I know about this:

You might try Body Glide, I have used their stuff pretty frequently because the little bits that dangle downstairs get a little chafey and both the glide and their chamois glide work great! I am sure it will help with your nips.

Time to revive this thread AGAIN!
I have never had this problem before. I am currently in Myrtle Beach on vacation and this happened to me twice now. It is quite painful. A quick google search brought me here. bikeforums.net is awesome! Unfortuately, the ride is over and I will just have to deal with it now Maybe something with the heat and humidity that my body isn't used to?

The same thing just happened to me when I bought a pair of merino wool shirts (70% merino / 30% acryl). The end of my nips were red raw after a few heavy days cycling. I was going to send them back but they are so light and easy to wash I am going to put little plasters over my nips while I tour. I never got this issue with wool tops but they are just too heavy and make me sweat more.

I've been riding shorts with clip-on suspenders for decades. (The mentor of New England racing in my day, John Allis did the same though I suspect he road higher end shorts with the buttons for non-clip-on suspenders.) Back then I wore cotton fishnet tees under my jerseys. I had to keep the straps off my nipples so I ran them through a rubber band to center them (and keep the clips outboard for better abdominal breathing though I doubt that made any difference. I now just move the clips in.
I wonder if bib straps sometimes have the same effect. (I've owned one pair of bibs. The bib version of my favorite shorts. Yeah, a touch more comfortable at their best, but once things stretched out a little, not as good and snug as suspendered regular shorts, more expensive and a lot more hassel in the restroom.)
And a thought I just had. Instead of nipple coverings, how 'bout wearing a silk tee? Very, very comfortable and the same material I wear under my cycling and boot socks for the same reason. (REI has them at decent prices.)

Used to happen when I was a runner. Something about loose cheap cotton shirts, humidity, and sweating. Doesn't happen while cycling because I wear jerseys that fit properly. I've never had an issue with bib straps causing problems.
Always interesting to see which members have been banned on these old threads and sift through the banned user list to try to figure out what happened. Usually their offensive posts have been deleted so you can only guess. Often, the mods did not update the banned user thread with their name so you can't figure it out.
In this case, Chasm54 apparently self-imposed the ban, which is a thing that they used to do.
And it will be interesting to see if this thread gets locked and/or disappeared. It's very arbitrary and random as to what They decided to do with these zombie threads.

I've had it happen in the past and the simple easy solution is to take of the shirt and get yourself a suntan. No, don't put on the suntan lotion or it will make the nipples burn. Go topless for a couple of days, only putting the top on when you are wanting to walk in a store. Let yourself get the suntan and the Vitamin D you need to keep cancer away and let the nipples heal up at the same time.

Body Glide works on nipples.
It goes on just like anti-perspirant.
Every triathlete on the planet has a stick in their gear bag.
Any running specialty store should have it. REI and Dicks carries it as well.

Body Glide not available way back then, eh? Could have changed the course of ancient history!

Finally! A non-ambiguous thread title.
So many times I wanted to start a thread of "Name your favorite ambiguous thread title". Or how my mind sometimes slips to my 12 year old self and goes beyond the context of bike forums.

I saw it had been revived multiple times over a 10 year period and figured, being as how it was in the top 5 Google search results, I would bring it back again. This was a completely new phenomenon to me, and I was both curious and somewhat concerned. I will admit that I like my jerseys a little looser, but that has never been a problem in the past. It had to have been related to the higher heat & humidity levels of the South Carolina shoreline.

It happened to me in Calgary occasionally running long distance in the summers. Cotton and sweat (the salt stings) did a number one day so bad I had blood stains showing through my white Tee - not a good look. Waterproof tape was what I used.
