Near mint vintage paint is weakness. This New Old Stock Frame showed up on Ebay and darn it, its my size... needless to say, its on its way. Pretty hefty starting point at $355 shipped, I will have to hustle and get some flips done to lighten the impact. In the meantime, will scour this thread again to get the ideas for the ideal build.

1984 Schwinn Voyageur, NOS frame in Wine Red . Apparently lived in the original Schwinn box or the last 37 years waiting to be built and was purchased from an estate. Looking at a mix of vintage/modern but the goal to keep the vintage look. I have a variety of parts on hand. Velocity 36H 700 Wheel Set in Silver, 35mm Gravel King, Bar Ends, etc. Just need to figure out the drive train and brakes. I have the groupset from an 86 Passage and 87 Voyageur, those may get polished for this build. My biggest concern is the brakes, never been that good at setting up Canti's... I do have some 27" wheelsets available for this build if the canit's pose an issue

I have read the rear dropout spacing is just 120 - can anyone confirm? Does this make the Canti Set up even more difficult? Thanks!

Nice score, I wouldn't call $355 shipped is too hefty. How many NOS Voyageurs are still out there??

I'd highly recommend Dia Compe 981 + Kool Stop cross pads. This combo makes set up a breeze. Good adjustability for 700c or 27", good stopping power, good period correct looks, cheap. Hard combo to beat.
I wouldn't worry about the rear spacing, just set it to whatever you want/need.

Thank you for the recommendations on the 981 and Kool Stop. I have the 981's from a '86 Passage and '87 Voyageur. You are right on the NOS at $355 - I debated for a bit and then just did it, figured wouldn't see another...need to stop looking though as I have too many bikes when I thought I may not see another like it

Awesome build. Did you have the frame painted or powder coated? You have some awesome parts, where did you get crankset? Also, what model are the brifters?

I am trying to figure out how to configure my '84 Voyageur frame pictured above, as of now - I was thinking of just going with a 105 10 speed group with Brifters, but I really like what you are doing with the modern upgrades with the vintage look. How about your wheelset?

ravenix Can’t wait to see that build come together. That crankset! Now I need one.

What are you doing for wheels and tires? Fenders or no?

The frameset is powdercoated by Mark Rainey at Groody Brothers in Topeka Kansas. Mark is a fantastic guy who does real quality work at a very reasonable price! He did some extras on this frame such as rebrazing the cantilever posts so I can use a 700c wheelset, also the white lug pin-striping is quite nice

Some parts I've been nabbing from eBay (like that Takagi Crank with the Schwinn stamp & Berthoud saddle) other stuff is from Soma cycles. The Dura Ace brifters I've had for 10 years on another bike, but pulled them for this build. They are 7700... actually I think 7703 as the front is a triple.

Wheelset is in the works....

The crankset is a rare duck; never seen a Takagi Tourney XT crank stamped with the Schwinn logo before this one! The 48 and 34 chainring are from Real, the inner 26 is Takagi.
Definitely doing aluminum fenders, 40mm Berthoud smooth should fit over 32mm tires (I hope)

My 86 currently has 27x1 1/4 with 45mm fenders (VO hammered) and there is room to spare, so you should be good. Im about to switch to 700x35 though.

Both the 48 & 34 110bcd Real chainrings I bought on eBay, they are NOS ..... pretty sure there are a couple more still available when I was searching. Priced around $50 each but I was able to bring that down through best offer. Good luck!

It arrived. Delayed due to weather ! The seller shipped it in the original Schwinn Chicago box. I was scared based in the damage to the box. This bike has a head badge indicating feb 23 1985. I think wine red is an 84 color. So maybe a hold over frame? Either way with just a few minor scrapes, it shines like it did when someone boxed it up in Japan 36 years and 1 day ago today. So many decisions....but happy new bike day. So glad I pulled the trigger in this impulse buy!

Wow, two very fresh frames! The white lug lining on that SP blows me away every time.

I've noticed touring bikes of this era usually seem to give the top model vertical rear drop-outs, and the next one down would get horizontal — why the difference?

Two questions:
1) Did you try 700c wheels before having the canti posts redone?
2) Where did you find new decals?

This is just gorgeous. Congratulations or well done. I can just tell how great this is going to turn out already.

Does anyone know if only the SPs came with vertical dropouts? It looks like all the other Voyageurs in this thread are horizontal.

Depends on the year. The years where there was an SP, the other Voyageur had horizontal. But in non-SP years the Voyageurs have vertical. The 86-88 non-SP have vertical dropouts.

Nope, didn’t try to fit 700c wheels beforehand. I’ve had way too many issues trying to find canti brakes that work when swapping from 27 to 700 on other frames. Just wanted to avoid the whole issue this time. The frame was a disaster when I bought it, it was always going to get stripped and powder coated so having the canti posts moved was a no brainer.

VeloCals! Good folks and have a ton of decals in stock or can recreate pretty much anything.
