All of my bikes have bells. The one with a Crane bell often causes people to jump out of the way, even if I ring it at a distance. The sustain on those things is amazing, and they're quite loud. Sometimes I don't have a chance to uses it until I'm fairly close.
I've found the "double ringer" Reich bells and equivalents to be loud enough, and are pleasant sounding. One time I passed a gaggle of older ladies walking on the MUP behind my house and rang it as I came up to them. As I rode by, one of them said "that's a very nice bell you have there!".
