Hey, thanks ever'body for all the inputs, and war stories. I ended up buying a Bell Lynk(?) at Walmart for about $35, and just now got off the bike after a 30-40 minute ride, with helmet. I guess it could be worse;-) Without having any standard for comparison in my previous no-helmet experience, it is what it is. I'm sure I'll figure out things that ought to be better, or different, and look in more detail at the next one, assuming I live long enough to need a next one.
Note to easyupbug: I also live in OV, home of the never-ending city council recall election...the gift that keeps on giving.
Many of the symptoms you describe usually occur after my 3rd gin and tonic. The beauty of this part of the country is that it's ALWAYS G&T weather. Maybe that's the problem too.
