Spinning vinyl:

Sweet surrender on the quayside
You remember we used to run and hide
In the shadow of the cargoes I take you one at a time
And we're counting all the numbers down to the waterline
Near misses on the dogleap stairways
French kisses in the darkened doorways
A foghorn blowing out wild and cold
A policeman shines a light upon my shoulder
Up comes a coaster fast and silent in the night
Over my shoulder all you can see are the pilot lights
No money in our jackets and our jeans are torn
Your hands are cold but your lips are warm
She can see him on the jetty where they used to go
She can feel him in the places where the sailors go
When she's walking by the river and the railway line
She can still hear him whisper
Let's go down to the waterline

Capitol Theater. Passaic, NJ c. 1979. Dire Straits on their first U.S. Tour. They played this and all those amazing songs from their first album. Needless to say the show was the stuff of Legend. As were many shows in that era at the same grubby but unbeatable rock venue by acts like the Police and Little Feat.

Unforgettable.

Going further back in the vinyl time machine. A blues standard done tastefully by Rory Gallagher in 1972:

Well, did you ever,
Well, did you ever,
Well, did you ever,

Well, did you ever wake up,
With them bullfrogs on your mind?
Well, did you ever wake up,
With them bullfrogs on your mind?
You had to sit there laughin',
Laughin' just to keep from crying.

Well, did you ever wake up,
With that one woman on your mind,
Well, did you ever wake up,
With that one woman on your mind,
Sit there laughin',
Laughin' just to keep from crying.

My mother got em,
My father got em,
My sister got em,
My brother got em.

I woke up this morning,
My grandmother had them too,
Well, don't you know about that,
I got the bullfrog blues.
Bullfrog

My mother got em,
My father got em,
My sister got em,
My brother got em.

I woke up this morning,
My grandmother had them too,
Well, don't you know about that,
I got the bullfrog blues.

Called up my doctor,
Was not feeling so well,
Well, I called up the doctor,
Was not feeling so well.

He looked inside his bag and said,
"Well, well"....

You don't need no doctor,
You don't need no pill,
You don't need no doctor,
You don't need no pill.

Just take my advice,
It'll surely cure your ills.

Head on down to New Orleans,
Prettiest place you ever seen,
Get on down to the river bend,
That's where the music never ends.

Open your ears,
Don't you feel good?
Get yourself one helluva shot of rhythm 'n' blues.

Go on down to new Orleans,
The greatest place you ever been,
Head on down to the river bend,
Dig the music of the Cajun bands,
*****-tonk piano,
Make you feel good,
Open your ears,
To rhythm 'n' blues.

Well, did you ever wake up,
With them bullfrogs on your mind?
Well, did you ever wake up,
With them bullfrogs on your mind?

You had to sit there laughin',
Laughin' just to keep from crying.

Well, did you ever wake up,
With that one woman on your mind,
Well, did you ever wake up,
With that one woman on your mind,

You had to sit there laughing,
Laughing just to keep from crying.

Further back to 1966. A snip of this is my phone's ringtone:

Eight miles high and when you touch down
You'll find that it's stranger than known
Signs in the street that say where you're going
Are somewhere just being their own

Nowhere is there warmth to be found
among those afraid of losing their ground
Rain gray town known for its sound
In places small faces unbound

Round the squares huddled in storms
Some laughing some just shapeless forms
Sidewalk scenes and black limousines
Some living some standing alone

I must have been a weird 12 year old kid. I also bought and listened to this issued the same year:

It did raise some eyebrows at the record store when I took it to the counter.

In 1967 all hell broke loose, so it was no longer considered all that strange.

My wife made me stop playing this when my kids were young and in the house. Somehow my boys know most of the lyrics to "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" in spite of that.

(Yes, I know that is from "Absolutely Free". I wasn't allowed to play that one either.)

yep. i really loved the part about the producer, having to deal with MS (i think was the disease), and still having the life to go at making music. you know every last bit of them gets poured into the beats...sound familiar?

I was giving a quiz today in my Dynamics class and listening to tunes on my iPod. A student asked me what I was listening to and I told him Lucinda Williams. I also said that I'm not really a "country" fan, but I do like her music. The student's jaw dropped and he said "You have great taste in music." Maybe he thought I was listening to Boston.

I wonder what he would have thought if I had been listening to some of the Zappa on my iPod.

Radiohead and the arcade fire on shuffle.

I think these two are among the best musical offerings of this generation. Love it.

Listening to the UK Subs while I'm writing the script for the second episode of the new show we are doing for A&E...perfect down beat music for a really depressing show.

I post this link in the Twitter Feed for you punks.

LINK

If you like late 70's/early 80's LA punk you'll love this stuff
