Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Most folks say that for a bike workout, as opposed to piddling, you figure you'll get about the same workout on the trainer in 75% of the time required outdoors. Maybe less. 2 hour outdoor ride is nothing. 1.5 hours on the trainer or rollers definitely feels like you did something. The difference is that there are no breaks indoors. The pedal pressure is there all the time. Very efficient use of time.

Tire doesn't know it's not on the road. It's wearing down just the same.

Mine cost $125 new from Bike Nashbar, fluid resistance. In the past 20+ years, I've fallen off more than twice. Probably over 20,000 miles on them. Best money I ever spent on cycling gear. Past two days, I've put 1:20 on them each day, steady 80% of FTP. Pouring down rain outside, 41°, 55° on my rollers, box fan, nice sweat puddle.

My power on a trainer or spin bike gets me a lot more 'distance' in the time ridden because they arent real miles.
do you delete the miles you rack up when riding down hill with a tail wind? Or even just going downhill coasting?

Irrelevant- only the weak coast. And only the really weak ride with the wind.

Next!
