I suspect that the above leather was painted, not dyed, but I could be wrong. The leather could be cleaned and repainted but would eventually begin to wear as the bike is ridden extensively, especially during inclement weather.
I once tried the Brooks leather tape. I did not care for the "feel or padding." It was very "hard" and not that different from the Hunt-Wilde plastic tape that was standard issue on 1970s Schwinn Varsities, Continentals, Super Sports, etc. Also, the color did not hold up as well. In just a few hundred miles of fair weather riding it began to discolor and look shabby.
My homemade goatskin bar wrap and the Velo Orange elk hide bar wrap I've used, does a great job maintaining its "cushy" feel and simply mellows with age. I do coat mine once a year with Resolene, which is a clear leather protection application. It helps to repel water and makes cleaning any dirt and stains easier.
