Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey all -- how fabulous you all are. My only rant is that now I'll have to wait 360+ days to see some of you again. Others I'm hoping to catch at Bucks or Seagull. And, Kloden, I'd love to ride Ragbrai (sp?)!

Last year JugglerDave and I learned we could do a metric, and this year it was SOOOOoooo much easier! But this year I learned more:

Denny has Rottweilers. Don't go in Denny's house. The doggies won't like it. Best to heed this advice.
Hey, my puppies love me, what can I say! They also say "Thanks", for keeping me company during my lag time on the ride. That bit of conversation kept me going to the finish, and I did appreciate it.

Do you think if I hooked a couple of my Rott's up to a recumbent bike, I'd get away with being an Amish cart next year?

It felt great seeing all you again, I'm glad we could meet up for lunch and at the rest stop.

I would have liked more time with you all but I'm glad that I started early. Hey I completed it this year!

I got a little faster, but you guys got so much faster! WOW

Mirona, we missed you. Maybe next year!

Some pictures...

As I looked, I realized I took no pictures once the ride started.

But here are a few of the pre-ride including one from Saturday, and one of the lady that was kind enough to take the group photo for us.

At one point, it seemed like everyone was on a cell phone, and a humorous thought occurred to me... someone calling someone and looking at them and asking in an irritated tone, "Would you please answer your phone?"

I am glad that others were more dilligent in photography...

Here's another ride, in my hometown. I don't know if any of you have done this ride, the Schuylkill Scenic Century on Sunday Sept 10.

MikeR, it was great to see you - so glad we met up at lunch! Cheers for you on the finish; last year it was so hot, I think we all struggled at one point or another.

I'm sure we'll be running into one another out there another time this season. Thought you might appreciate a couple of shots of that beautiful ride of yours:

And Darwin, Yes! We were talking to each other on our cell phones in that one shot

Hey! I like the new avatar RTNW. If you got it...might as well flaunt it.

I'm thinking about this Seagull Century you folks mentioned. Have to check the date to see when and where to see if I can make it.

It's Saturday, Oct. 7th. I've did the 2003 Metric (on a mtb. bike) and the 2005 full century. It rained real slightly in '03 and just poured in '05. I'm hoping for another day like 2004 where I heard it was gorgeous.

It's the flattest century around. There are only two hills: one a bridge overpass and the other is the bridge out to Assateague Island. The rest is flat...really, really flat, like a billiard table flat! Great food (baked goods, bagels, ice cream, fruit, etc.) at the stops and really huge turnout of around 7-8000 people. They have showers available at Salisbury Univ. (ride start/end) and pre and post ride dinners as well.

And UGH! I need to lose 32,768 lbs before that bike looks right on me. And those are 46cm bars too!

The stupid thing is, both the Trek and the Scattante are almost exactly the same size, and the Scat is compact, and it even looks fine on YOU, and you're like 6" taller than me. So it can't be the bike, it has to be my fat arse.

Dex, I don't think your helmet is crooked . . . I think maybe it's your head.

And you look adorable either way.

B

edit: never mind, I found yours . . . but not any of the rest. The Cap'n shouldn't be too hard to spot. . .

Me and the FIL are there. If I were more savvy I'd be able to post the pics like Cydewaze. I'm wearing a Salsa Cycles tequila jersey and the FIL is the 2nd pic after mine.

Hmmm, anybody see me? I went through a few pages on either side of where you guys are but didn't see any of me. I wasn't invisible was I?

Come to think of it, I don't remember even seeing a camera until right near the end of the ride. I thought it was like 3:05PM or something like that on the clock. Were there others wearing camoflage or something?

I think I was with you and Cap'n America when we saw the camera . . . and yes, it was near the end of the ride. Can't remember if we were close to spongedad and Dex at that point. If we can find the stars and stripes, we should be nearby! I'll keep looking . . .

Check out this guy - I know he wasn't with our group, but I think he looks like a fun guy

Beth

edit: nevermind. I am an idiot and can't figure out how to put full pictures on here.

You and Beth were riding too damn fast, so the images were probably blurred.

I think you're right we were together at that point. It wasn't long after that I decided to go on my solo final sprint. Let me tell you I was flying up that hill through the neighborhood at 21mph and pushing 100% all the way to the end. I only caught Spongedad about 1/3 mile from the end and just missed catching Dex by two hundred yards. They probably had quite a gap on us when we passed the camera.

I went through all the photos around the time we went through and can't find a single one of myself, john or beth. Psuaero, RoadToNowhere and myself all went by the photographers at virtually the same time. And yes, the three of us weren't crawling up the hill right before it like a lot of people we passed were. So I guess they couldn't get us on film. Bummer!

I'm going to circle back to each and every photographer on the Bucks County Covered Bridge ride and make sure they get a shot of me.
