I usually just wear something similar to this:
https://www.bellbikehelmets.com/produ...l.asp?prodID=7
(a solid color like black or blue)

It does not look as crazy as new school helmets but is still a good helmet that will provide protection. All a cap/hairnet/bomber cap etc will do is maybe make it more likely for an open casket at the funeral. But to each his own.

hahaha!
The leather hairnets cannot be legally offered for sale in this country. If a shop were caught selling these they would be fined or whatever. Branford Bike used to sell them.

I still have mine. A white Cinelli. Its still by far the best fitting "helmet" I own (or tried). But, I don't wear it no more.

The hairnets were still worn by pros through the early 200* seasons, until wearing a certified helmet became mandatory in the peloton.

Interesting stuff: helmets are now made to "slide" along pavement. Older bicycling helmets had an issue with gripping the asphalt or whatever surface too much, resulting in serious damage (broken neck etc) which I'm sure you can picture.

I wonder how much "grip" the leather hairnet has...

Source?

That's interesting, because I distinctly remember reading a helmet study that found no difference in injury rates for hard shelled helmets versus those without.

Do you mean those without hard shell helmets? As in the old school leather "hairnets" we are talking about? Or do you mean those without any helmet?

Just wanted to clarify. . .

No, helmets without a hard shell. I don't know that you can still get them, but there are helmets that have the foam with either no hard plastic shell or with only a fabric covering. These are the non-slidey type. The study found no discernable differences in injury characteristics between the two groups.

Back when the helmet push first came out, the local police department in my podunk town GAVE all the kids in elementary school a free styro-foam style helmet. I guess all of us in middle school didn't ride bikes enough?

i don't understand why nobody sees the immediate solution: stop riding bikes. is all that fun really worth the helmet/no helmet argument? i mean, hundreds of years ago they got by just fine, you know, eating dirt and playing with sticks and stones. it only really makes sense.

And how does one "rock" a helmet, anyway? Is that like boning a baseball bat?
