Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I know a guy using an X.9 rear derailleur with rival shifters. No need to go all the way to XX now that SRAM has Apex and 10 speed mountain down to the X.7 level. You can even go up to a 36t cassette.

I'm glad you bumped this. I wouldn't mind doing this for Brasstown or for some of the climbs in the Spanish Sierra Madrid mountains. I think I'd also use the Apex parts now, though. Quick search shows the Apex RD for $57, handles 11-32 rear cassette, and the PG-1050 cassette is $83.

And shimano has wide range 10 speed cassettes too if that's your preference. Also IRD.

The Sram Apex 11-32 ten speed cassette can be installed and used with an Ultegra drivetrain: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...r-fear-no-hill

I know that this is a SRAM XX thread, but the idea is pretty much using MTB RD to accommodate a wider cog. The question now is for the new "mid-compact" cranks I've been seeing lately... was it 52-36? Can you use a 52-36 crank with an 11-32 or 11-34 cog along with MTB RD's (SRAM XX, X7, or even Shimano XTR or XT)?

RD and shifter matching isn't really that complex, ultimately as long as the mountain bike RD has the same pull ratio as the same brand's road derailleur it should work perfectly.

This intrigues me. Only works with Ultegra 6600? What would constitute a short hanger that prevents that? Are short hangers a race bike thing?

Hey cool club kids, what's the story with ***?

Inside gossip aside, can you pop on an 11-32 Apex to a Ultegra 6600 RD?

That is exactly what I'm running now on my Specialized Roubaix Pro. XX 11-32 cassette with a 9spd Shimano XT RD. Mid compact setup in front at 52-36 with the 36 being a Rotor Q-Ring, shifters are Ultegra 6600. With teflon cables, the shifting is clean and snappy. This setup gets me all-round performance for endurance rides in hilly San Diego County.

Oh, and by the way, this setup is lighter than a Dura-ace derailler and cassette

I have the 11-32 Apex rear cassette, currently on my touring bike with a Shimano XT rear derailleur. Shifts beautifully. I'm going to put it on the Red equipped bike for a couple of events next year, and I am planning to just buy the Apex RD for those.

So the trick is to use a long cage shimano rd for use w/Apex?

I thought that 10spd Shimano road and mountain derailleur Were not cross-compatible.

Anyone else out there using an Ultegra 6600 with an Apex cassette? I have that Der. and I'd like to try it, as oppossed to switching groups, but it's too expensive an experiment for me.

I'm running a long cage Ultegra with a 12-32 9 speed cassette. It works fine. The person that told me it worked fine was running a 12-34 10 speed MTB cassette with the same derailleur.

Could just wait for 2013 SRAM Red which uses the road-version of the XX cassette anyway.

Use a 9 speed Shimano mountain derailleur with the Shimano 10 speed road shifters. The new 10 speed MTB derailleurs have a revised pull ratio. With SRAM, you can use either the XX mountain derailleur (as Steve, the OP of this thread, did) or the new Apex RD.

I have been to the Mountain Top!

FYI: I tried a long cage ultegra RD with the XX 11-32 and found that the jockey pulley was touching the sprockets in the taller gears even when I had adjusted b-tension screw to its limit. That's why I went to the 9 spd XT RD and found shifting nirvana!
