I have a Mavic 571 Shimano 8 speed that I was running with entire Dura Ace 74xx series. Let me know if youre interested, it has Vittoria Corsa Gum tires as well. Its just sitting here next to me.

Lot of good suggestions here. I think the path of least/easiest resistance is best. I just want to get him something so he can be up and running and then he can decide if he wants to keep this setup with down tube shifters or go full modern. I am saying 8 speed because with the shifter parallel to the down tube, it clicks back 7 times, which is where I’m getting 8 speed from. I have moderate knowledge of Shimano DA, which is why I posted this here, because some of you have ridiculous knowledge on these systems.

There should be a little 7s or 8s printed on the cap of the right shift lever, or you’ll see 7401 or 7402 stamped on the tube-side of the lever.

That being said, it should be able to run anything up to 10s in friction mode.

Also, those shifters are worth money and would likely be good trade bait for a set of shifters that will index 8, 9 or 10 speeds properly with the current RD he has. (There were DA 9 & 10 speed down tube shifters that play nicely with his RD).

Agreed

My 7403 converted 8/9/10 wheelsets will stay long after the aftermarket sets are toast.
