So, looking at it this way I guess my grail would be a mid 80's Peugeot in the champagne brown color with a chrome fork in my size. I rode one like that all over Germany in the 80's and keep searching for another. Nothing shows up locally in my size or at the other sources it can be shipped from.

One like this that once again and all the way across the country.

Forever bike - a bike you actually own, that, for any number of reasons, not necessarily the same as those for a grail bike, you simply can't part with.

Most of my grail bikes I don't own - Trek 990 MTB, 1988 Schwinn Premis (just for the wicked fade), any early not-Sport Stumpy, etc

Most of my forever bikes are not ones I've really desired, thus not really grail bikes. They're forever bikes mostly for sentimental reasons, ones with too many great memories to ever consider selling.
We are polar opposites. The grail bikes I have are mostly, but not in all cases, spur of the moment purchases, unique/rare/not ever going to find another in this lifetime type of bikes. But not necessarily desired by many. Forever bikes are the ones I will ride into the ground. Things with sentimental value to me get pedestal treatment.
