Usually, when you order a crankset, the seller will include a recommended spindle length. If your current spindle is either too long or too short you can run into compatibility issues that can affect shifting.
You mention that you are considering installing a rear disc brake. This will be of limited benefit if your current brakes work well. Think about this: There are still some cars that have disc and drum brakes, but the disc brakes are always on the front wheels

"Bolted together" is a very poor choice of words.. the freewheel sprockets are typically THREADED onto the freewheel ratchet. Modern FreeHUBS have a collar that is outboard of the sprockets.. a freeWHEEL has an inset "collar" that holds the ratchet assembly together...

The bottom bracket I have will need a 36mm spanner to remove it. The removal tool I have fits a splined model. I want to get a new bottom bracket. This one grinds. The crankset vendor says I need a 110mm bottom bracket. More measurements to take but I need the bottom bracket out first to get good measurements. More too come.

We've got a guy replacing all the parts on his Huffy with Campagnolo parts. This sort of reminds me of that thread.

You shouldn't need to remove the BB to measure the spindle. But if you're gonna take it out anyway...

I actually haven't bought anything expensive at all. The new bottom bracket is a Shimano and is $16. Not exactly top of the line.

The analogy is more about just upgrading parts. Not necessarily using top of the line stuff.

It has inspired me to take the plunge and see just what I can do with inexpensive parts from Amazon. I will create a new build thread to document my silly endeavor.
