I select my shoes first. This establishes what my shoe-to-pedal interface will be. The shoe has to work for its intended purpose, be warm or cool enough for the weather I expect, and be compatible with my years' worth of booties and rain covers.

Preferring the security of clipless riding, I've settled on SPD-SL for higher speed riding and SPD for mountain, commuting and lower speed recreational riding. So, now I just find the lightest, most reliable and aesthetically correct SPD-SL pedals for my faster bikes, and find the most durable pedals for my MTB and commuting needs. For lower speed recreational riding, the pedal must match the aesthetic of the bike.

So, then, just buy pedals...

MKS Sylvan Touring are great all around pedals, the Next series seems very nice, I also like the MKS Urban Platforms ...

Add some nice MKS cages (with leather straps for the full), and you're gold!

I have this one...it is pretty good. But I much prefer the lambdas!
