POLL : Holy Cow! What are GAS prices in your area?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I haven't noticed.
I've been riding my bike to work.
I haven't been to a gas station in over a week.

Take that!

But I notice the people are still driving like there's an endless supply.
People are still driving up north this weekend.
People are still driving Hummers, Tahoes, and Excursions.
People are still trailering their boats.
People are still driving 80mph.

It's not like there's a movement afoot to change behavior.

As a co-worker said, "With all the people staying home this weekend, the roads will be less congested for me!"

No, the big lie is that 75% of Chicago's fuel is brought in from Canada. Not even close to true, especially in the summer, where most of Chicago's gas is produced in the Gulf Coast and shipped up the pipeline. And a lot of that issue is caused by Chicago's ridiculous insistence on Reformulated Gasoline (In a previous life, I was a gasoline trader).

1.29/liter CDN, or 3.40/gallon CDN, that's 1.08/liter USD or 2.86/gallon USD

on the bright side the CDN dollar is going up I'm also thinking about getting a closed chain, internal hub gear bike for commuting now.

Anyone else taking a good looooong look at those Smart Cars now? the one's that look like shopping carts with lawn mower engine's?

At all stations except for one, the going rate is $3.00+ for regular unleaded. I topped off this morning for $2.52. They were charging the same price yesterday, too. Makes me think that this all might be a little money driven...

I got lucky and filled up for $2.35 on Monday, I haven't driven since. The small town thing is great, I commuted and did all my errands yesterday on the Trek-commute+library+ post office+groceries only added up to 12 miles. I don't plan on driving anywhere until the crit next Tuesday.

Wow! That cost more than a jug of cheap wine over here.....

I will be buying a SMART Car or Toyota Ecco soon. I can't decide which one. Opinions?

Oh, and today 3.69 a gallon. I use 93oct, so I'm looking at 3.89. I'd be suprised if it didn't go up a bit more before it goes down. And to think last year I thought 1.99 was expensive.

I have to drive 260 miles this weekend. Joy.

Heard of the concept of 'peak oil' ?
Check out -> www(dot)endofsuburbia(dot)com
and
www(dot)oilendgame(dot)come

The first paints a pretty bleak picture, the second a possible solution that might actually work in a profit driven, capitalistic society. Interesting stuff.

A little alarmist? Maybe, maybe not. Plenty of smart folks don't think its way off the mark, and there are plenty to reasons to at least think about it.

So, yes... I suspect these gas prices could be around for a while. Who knows...

Uttered by me in bar last night...

The only thing worse than high gas prices is discussing high gas prices.

End of story.

I heard that home heating costs this year will almost double the costs last year. I sense that we will be wearing a lot of sweaters at home this winter.

It's normal. Our fuel is taxed highly, to persuade people to move away from cars and onto other forms of transport. Because we have much better public transport it's a bit more viable to do this than in the US. You need cars.

In Venezuela its aprox 10 cents a gallon! Thats cheaper then when I was in Saudi! I paid 2.93 in Sterling Va yesterday. As was mentioned before, its funny how increased costs of fuel are immediately transferred to the customer, while decreases in costs take "a few weeks" to hit the market.

I paid $3.08/gal today for reg for the Honda, and $3.19 for premium for the Ford. I haven't been planning to drive the Ford at all, but the transmission in the Honda is crapping out - at the worst possible time of course.

I need to sell the Ford and buy something practical, then I can afford to ditch the Honda.

Please don't take offense Doid, but IMO much of the run-up in gas prices prior to Katrina can be laid at the feet of the commodities traders. I understand the concept of supply and demand, but am at a loss to understand how a 20% increase in demand over 2 years justifies an 80% increase in the cost of the raw material. I think those guys at the Mercantile Exchange live in an alternate universe. I know a lot of them have invested heavily in oil futures, and are really lining their pockets now. Where's Elliot Spitzer when you really need him?

That concludes my rant. Gas was $3.19/gallon here yesterday afternoon - probably more today. I'm so glad I telecommute.

We have a four hour wait and two mile lines to endure if we want gas here. I believe our gas is 3.00

Then there will be drive-offs and arguments and crime.....I just love America's dependence on oil.

I also heard that Chicago has some of the highest prices in the country, which station owners are blaming on the effects of the hurricane, and the fact that they aren't getting as much fuel from that area any longer. The big hole in that lie is that 75% of Chicago's fuel is brought in from Canada.
And yet, they're still driving into the city, instead of taking advantage of the rather extensive public transportation system we have here.

Don't know what the price of the pump is right now, work at home, fill up once a month and anywhere I can't ride by bike, make use of the public transport system, subsidized by our tax dollars.

Too much "road rage" around here for me!

hmmm went up again today aparantly... this is insane, at least for around here, i've only been driving for 6 or 7 years, and " I! " can remember when it cost half as much to fill my tank up.

1.39/liter CDN, or 3.67/gallon CDN, that's 1.17/liter USD or 3.08/gallon USD

boise needs a public transportation system. im screwed because im driving a jeep that gets 14.5mpg, and i have to commute to school(~25 miles) and work(~20 miles) every day.. and the way my schedule is setup it doesnt allow me enough time to ride my bike instead of drive. so i am buying a civic. wish we could get smart cars in america
