Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well then you're not measuring grade.

I thought they measured it based on road distance rather than horizontal distance in the UK. I just checked, and it looks like I was wrong. First time for everything I guess

New one from today's ride. This is the top of the Oxbow Corkscrew Road climb near Foresthill in Placer County, CA.

Any reason that almost all of the pics have drive side of your bikes facing away?

Nice hills though...

Because, at the time these were taken, I didn't know about the BF rules of bicycle photography. Also, by habit I never lean my bike in such a way that it could land on the rear derailleur if it falls.

I'm always looking for new climbs, so there will be more of these. I'll try to remember to photograph the drive side next time.

HA! I was just there a couple of weeks ago. Being fresh off a double-tire blowout after a descent, I was super chicken-****ed going down that.

I don't stop on climbs to take these pictures. I don't care about descent segments, so I stop going back down.

This picture has been a long time coming.
I remember seeing this thread, or maybe the other one.
Here in north Texas, there are a few hills here and there that have the "Truck on cheese" sign warning of a hill. None of them have the percent grade sign, as they simply aren't long enough for that to matter. And I got to thinking, what IS the nearest percent-grade sign to Dallas? Probably in New Mexico, Colorado, or Arkansas.
Anyway, I finally got my picture, doing a ride out by Lake Mead near Las Vegas. I went over some bigger hills, but this one had the sign, although not that steep or that long.

Two pictures from River Road, Big Bend area. Actually, I went DOWN the 10% hill, not up. There are longer and steeper hills around there, but that one had the sign. I did go UP the 15% "Big Hill", that was a pretty good challenge.

Grade % is vertical distance over horizontal distance. I don’t think vertical over road distance is any real measure.
