We just wrapped up our second annual repairapalooza in which we kept the shop open for 30 hours and where my friend and I turned wrenches for 25 hours straight... my stand was where the old three speeds were hanging out since I'm the "old three speed guy".

None really needed anything more than minor tune ups and seemed much more beloved than many of the other bikes that were coming in... I think they engender a little more affection from their owners and all seem to be very well kept.

The whole thing? or just the flip cap? The whole assembly is threaded (sort of) and screws into the hub. If the flip cap won't stay put you may need a new one. FWIW you can ride with out the oil cap...just don't park it with the hole down...especially on a carpet

Just the flip cap. It was in just fine, I popped it open to add a drop or to of oil and now it won't shut.

Perhaps if you carefully clean all the oil off it before pushing it back in it might stay in place. I must confess that's an AW three speed hub problem I haven't had before.

So what you are saying is that I now have plenty of time to find a Hercules ?
Yes indeed! You will not feel content with your collection of elderly English bicycles until you have found yourself a nice Hercules

The hub is fine. It's the bottom bracket plug.

Um..... get a magnifying glass and check that the wee overcentre spring for the lid hasn't got jammed. Sometimes tiny crumbs of dirt can get into the pivot and mess things up.

For anyone considering a 3 speed or an older bike, take the advice a few pages back and buy the chain tool and a new chain...

Where can a well made trigger shifter? I ordered a Swift folder with 3 speeds and a trigger shifter. The shifter disintegrated after a week. Total crap. Now I just ride the folder as a single speed (it's neat!). The man who puts the Swifts together says he knows no place where he can get a decent trigger shifter. Seems that all they are selling are new fangled twist shifters. I hate em. Not as much as I hate the new fangled derailleur shifter-brake combo abominations, but I still hate 'em.

You can still buy SA 3 speed triggers.

I just ordered a bunch for our shop.

That's what I got on the Swift, a "Sturmey Archer" - but made in China and Sturmey Archer in name only. As I said, it lasted a whole week, or was it five days?

Real SA trigger shifters from the 1930's are probably still going strong.

Stupid question (I know I am opening my self to a huge debate):

26 x 1 3/8 = 590 = 650A

So would I be able to swap a new set of rims in 650b and adjust or change the brakes for the slight drop? I had heard 650a to 650b is a much easier change (w/ new rims of course) than 700c to 650b.

I think it takes some special talents to take a very simple, utterly reliable, maintenance-free bit of machinery like that and re-engineer it into something that self-destructs in less than one week.

She has a Norco road bike in a 24 inch size that she likes but it is a long ride bike... the Shopper seemed to be a perfect choice and could actually be a bike she could ride forever.

Was just checking on models and my daughter's "new" 3 speed is a 1988 Raleigh Saffron which is the non folding version of the Compact... I think she will have fun making the bike her own while her dad tweaks out her ride.

A pic of the bike on the ride home (it fits me too).

Great looking bike

Getting mine overhauled within the next month. My other bike is in the shop getting a tune up. Once the car gets sold, the 3-speed is in for some work.

Sianelle -

I was out in my shop with my daughter's one evening a few weekends ago and said to my oldest daughter that, "Everyone should have an English 3 speed" and my youngest daughter gave me a sad sad look and said, "Dad... I don't have an English 3 speed".

I stayed up all night finishing her bike... a 1972 Raleigh Fireball 3 speed.
