Today will be my first commute of the year. January in Michigan, and it is not freezing and all the snow has melted for now.

That might have been an option a couple hundred posts ago. But you know.

Here in Utah, we've had a remarkably mild winter. Way too little snow, and if that doesn't turn around, it will be very bad for us this summer.

But it's been good for biking. Inspired by Veganbikes's accomplishment last year, I set a goal to ride every day in 2018.* Almost a month in, I haven't missed a day yet.

My other goal for this year is to run 500 miles. So far, I have run zero miles. I'm doing better with my biking than my running.

* I plan to ride every weekday and Saturday. I don't ride on Sundays.

Decided against riding to work yesterday. 40's and sunny and absolutely clear and dry when I left. Drive home was in a total whiteout with snow falling fast enough to accumulate on a moving car. Woke up to 4" and it's still snowing. Took a chance and followed the forecast. 45% chance of snow turned into 100% really quickly.

I'm in the midst of the 15 minutes a year I start to think having a fatbike would be cool. The fact is, I need to stop being a wuss, bundle up and ride my cross bike instead of staring at it in my living room.

I'm sorry, maybe it's Johnny I was thinking of. I get you guys mixed up sometimes. Whoever rode every day in 2017, you inspired me.

Unfortunately, not me there are frequent times I am away from the bikes and cannot ride. However I would love to ride a lot more this year!

TIL I don't know how to measure snow very well. We ended up with a total of just shy of 10" of snow. Didn't actually go out there and measure, just did a visual of what I thought it was. Way off. And yes, I do have a fat bike, and no, it is not fun to ride in slushy and salty leftover snow.

I did on one Thanksgiving with very little prep and suffered for it. Running is hard.

I run occasionally but not more than 3 miles. Did five mile runs two days in a row for the first time in ten years and feel exhausted.

Be careful increasing mileage like that.

It is bad to do so on the bike but especially running. Increasing running miles too quickly carries significant risk of injury. 10% per week is the recommendation and that is based on lots of people's real world experience vis a vis injuring themselves.

Rip a muscle and then you will be off the bike too.
