Tried to take me out again, and 13.5mph average.
I got a few things from today's ride. Some exercise for sure. I was curious what average speed I could get out of my "LeToaster" gong across town in city traffic, stopping at some intersections, up and down hills sidewalks etc., all the things city riding throws at you. My LeToaster is a single-speed bike with one coaster brake and about 1 to 2.6 gearing, one pedal rotation is 2.6 rear wheel rotations. It can go 19mph if I spin it up on the flats, but will still go up most grades fairly easily.
So I did an eleven mile loop and timed it and got an average of 13.5 mph. I know automobiles can get across town faster, but I don't think they would if they went the 25mph city speed limit, which none of them do.
The most interesting part of the trip was when a chick in a white car sped past me then spiked her brakes so she could turn right across my path into a driveway. Lucky for her I am brilliant and a great rider, I was right there on the coaster-brake and got out of that situation, I am sure a lot of cyclists in the same situation would have ended up on the car and the ground. That is not the first time a motorist has pulled that one on me, and I always give them a full salvo of choice words to brighten their day. It was pretty funny.
On the way home it started to rain and was a bit windy, a bit of weather had blown into town. Another great ride under my belt, some data gathered, some fun had, tomorrow is another day.
I think I could bring that average speed up with a different route, one that has less hills and different traffic, and of course a multi-speed bike would help because with a single-speed each time you have to stop at an intersection your acceleration is not as good as it might be. And a lot of it comes down to luck and if it is rush hour or not. It will be fun to do more of this type of research.
