I bought one of these not too long ago:

It comes with slick tires but once I put fatter knobbies on it I have no problems doing the normal trails where I live. The steel fork soaks up the impact pretty well. My plan is to just ride the Acera/Deore components to the ground and then put on SLX. I might get one of those Carver 29er 100mm rigid carbon forks later on but so far it's been pretty fun.
