but only the labels live on now.
Might have been a way to keep it from being passed off as original finish.

If it wasn't to mark it as a repaint, it's probably just like any other artist--we always sign our work.

different take: my dad used to custom order his cars. Once a car was delivered with the dealers name, riveted to the back of the body.

He refused to take delivery unless they either remove the plate, fill the holes and repainted, or paid him $500 for advertising for them.

Do you feel the same way about advertising for Cinelli?

that was a thing in the 1960’s especially in states that did not allow license plate frames.
locally Lou Ehler’s Cadillac placed a nameplate on the trunk lid. They tried to push it as a upscale thing.
the company that produced them? GM Nameplate.

they were widely known and did advertise in bike magazines for a time.
I don’t think of them as premier, but no matter, they are long gone.

Not that I have a lot of experience, but I don't know of another paint shop that did/does the same. And how are they premiere over the other shops?

Not mine, but I'm thinking about it. A '72 SC for sale by the Marin Museum of Cycling. Has a couple issues, (sweaty top tube, cracked crank arm), but is currently going for $1750. I'm pretty sure I'll have one of these one day, don't know if it's this particular one, though.

Yeah, ad copy indicates it is a custom build. Comes with a set of clinchers too. This is my size. Don't see earlier SC's in my size too often. It's tempting.

I'd bet those are wheels built by Spence Wolf, Phil hubs, Superchamp rims, T&S rear are the tells. That bike is right in the borderline of refinish or leave original.

Here is a Cinelli currently in my care. Has about 10 miles from new. Hung in the office of it's former (original) owner for 40 years after he rode it twice.

at some point I'll pull it out and take some better pictures. Original except for a set of wheels Spence built for me, and a set of Jim Merz titanium crank bolts. Display only. S/N 4719

You're right about the wheels. This bike has been posted a couple times on the Forum with the full ad, so I didn't post it here. Here's a bit from the ad about the wheels:

This bike was built for Tim Wilson by Spence Wolf, dean of NorCal custom builds. Spence also built the wheels.
Hubs: Phil Wood, 36/36 hole, 100/120mm, about first year of production, with chrome-plated barrels
Rims: Super Champion Record du Monde

Joe Bell's shop puts a "JB" logo on most of their work. Their work is absolutely stunning. Best of the best.

However not accepting new commissions at this time

I focused on the rims, indeed possible Spence work.
‘Yellow Rolls Royce comes to mind regarding the yellow example.

If you don’t know of any other shops that did the same, yet you know about Cycleart, then you’ve answered your own question.

Good marketing does not necessarily mean good quality. Or are you saying the likes of Chris Kvale and Jeff Bock are lacking?

That's gorgeous. That's the fourth Spence Cinelli that I've seen that doesn't have the down tube decal. It seems he sometimes ordered them that way, especially on the ones with a full chrome fork and the fully chrome treat triangle.
