If you spin it at the right speed, it's probably fine for a panorama

actually you make a really good point. All those nifty photos people like to stitch together could be created realtime.

I'm imagining taking a baseball pitching machine, turning it on its side. A little super glue and you've got a full 360 panorama of.....a velodrome or something else cool

doesn't even have to be the right speed, you just have to know the speed....

That's one of the main industrial applications for line scan cameras-- not scenic panoramas, but inspection of continuous processes or conveyor processes.

I was told there was no photo because the chips could time to the one thousandth of a second. Then, the winner commented on how his chip's zip tie had come loose and slide all the way down his fork and was hanging 1.5 - 2 inches below his left skewer (about 6 inches below my chip and about 2.5 to 3 inches in front of my chip). So, I formally protested the result. I was told by Georgia Cup and their AMB i.t. timing manager Philip that although his chip hanging off the front would affect the time, it would not be more than 0.007. So, they gave me second and ended the discussion. I was pretty sure that I won and others watching thought the same thing. However, I made my case and was overruled, so I accepted the 2nd place.

Question: Have you ever seen something similar? Do you agree that it wouldn't make a difference given 0.007 on a hard sprint with 6 inches down and 2+ inches in front?
I would have said, "I'm going to get my other gun and shoot all you mother****ers"

Seriously though good on that other guy for being honest.

Here is why chips don't work

USCF and UCI rules state that results are measured by the front plane of the front wheel crossing the vertical of the finish line, simple as that. Chip systems are great as a BACKUP, but not as a primary. As a matter of fact photo finish (ie. Finish Lynx) is required at NRC and UCI level events.

Fact is the organizer should have had a video or still camera. It is the responsibility of the organizer to provide the equipment, the officials only use/verify what they are provided. That said it can be a large expense for the good systems and the systems most local organizations have can't provide great resolution. My suggestions, sprint harder next time ;-)

Remember the attached pic from the US PRO Championships last year? Our chip timing backup said that Hamilton got second...
