Be sure to use the correct two prong. I have broken two or three using too much force, coupled (probably) with a tool that did not fit properly. Hope this picture helps and how I miss my website. It is difficult to offer help without it..

Yeah, with splined remover you don't really need a QR to hold it on. 9 times out of 10 I wouldn't bother, but there are a couple exceptions. For splined freewheels that came in and were on crazy tight and corroded, often I'd put a QR on there just for insurance, but it doesn't have to be particularly tight like with a toothed tool. Also if you're doing this at home with a big wrench instead of a vice, it's a good idea to put the QR on there just to keep the tool properly engaged. Lastly, if you have one of those tools with small splines like the top one in randyjawa's picture, I'd probably use a QR. I don't even remember what FW those were for, though I remember all those tools.
Thanks for filling in the details on toothed freewheel removal. You pretty much covered it.

I had to count my tools....15. I don't have 2 or 3 of what you have pictured but I do have an angled prong Campy and a 6 - prong Suntour.
