What would REALLY make things fair is to make it a 'claiming race'. We get to claim anyone's clunker for only $100 at the end of this contest. No removal of parts before the sale, either.

My goodness...you people really like to complicate things.

Let's keep this as simple as possible:

-No, you cannot sell a $100 bike for a profit and buy another with the proceeds.

-Many of you will end up with $100 clunkers in the end but a few of you will find $100 gems. The $100 is a firm budget. You get points for finding nice bikes but you'll also get points for POS bikes. It's up to you. $100 total, C&V bike. It has to survive 100km. Find, build and ride within 100 days.

-No, your find from 3 years ago you've already built up does not count. The hunt and build are 2 of the 3 caveats of this game.

-No, you can't rent a bike.

-If you have to spend 3 paragraphs justifying why your bike may fit here...it doesn't.

-Swapping parts around is OK but it comes out of your total budget.

-The bike is yours to do with as you please at the end. Give it away, trash it, sell it, keep riding. I don't particularly care.

- The bike should be classified as C&V. If you were post it here and someone says..."Hey, you might get better feedback if you go to the (MTB/Road) forum" then it doesn't count. I'm thinking pre-1990 road bikes and because MTB are newer...maybe 1995 and earlier. If in doubt, go older. There is no definition of true C&V but use your best judgment.

I'm in. There's a Mennonite bike shop that has a "scrap" pile out back. I'm sure I can find something in there. This should be a recently acquired bike/frame/whatever. That should help level the field a little

That I can handle, all I did to the Concorde is air up the tires and oil the chain.

I highly doubt It could make it 60 miles in it's current condition. The tires had 0psi and still looked full, they might be a little dried out..

SPD's are ok but don't give full points.

I just purchased a Diamondback 21 speed mountain bike, with newer Michelin semi street tires for $50.
Altus RD, 21 speeds. I pick it up tonight. The guy was cleaning out his garage and wanted to simply get rid of it.
I looked at it and it was in good shape, and looked like everything worked. Truthfully-I would have bought that bike before buying some POS Wallmart bike.

I will clean up and tune up the bike for elbow grease and white lithium grease - $0.
Next week the ice and snow should be melted to the point to get in 100 km.

Where to get a broke in Brooks for $10**********??

The best part - I can donate it to one of my grandkids after the 100k!

I was with rhm once, and we went into a bike shop with a lot of old beater parts. He came out with two usable leather saddles for $10. Neither was a Brooks, but for $10 your @$$ can't be picky.

Narhay, I've had a frame set lying around a long time. Is that allowed?

The frame is too big for me to ride. Is there a substitute for riding it, such as selling it and making sure the new owner rides it 100 km?

I've got a Shogun 100 sitting in the basement in "as found" condition. Paid 20 bucks for it. Pictures when I get some time, but you can see the back wheel in this shot, furthest one back on the right. I'm in!

Unused frameset is fine. Too big might mean it would be best to find something else for this particular competition. If you sell it to someone else and it is the right size for them then direct them over here.

Polished and waxed the frame, freed the freewheel and chain, BB and headset overhauled, bullhorn bars polished right up, although the quill was pretty rusty, new brake cables and housing installed, cleaned and lubed the wheels, tightened up some spokes.
I havent touched the shifter cables yet, but AI just took it for a spin and they progress nicely after some lube. I have 17 bucks and some change remaining, and new tires, tubes, strips and grips on the way from Nashbar.

r0ckh0und has offered me a 23" frame and I've accepted it, so I'll offer either of my 19” men's frames, and a 17" lady's, to anyone who wants one (i.e. for this challenge, or not). You pay shipping, but I can ship cheap. PM for details.
