The car's windshield is smashed to bits and the cop reports that the driver said he "thought he hit something last night."
Best wishes Jim. I hope that a-hole driver gets whatever the law and your attorney can throw at him.

Wishing a speedy and full recovery, both money wise and body wise.
Also, I am sure the driver of the car didn't do it on purpose, and mostly likely they felt real guilty after they ran, that is why he or she turned themselves in. On a preventive note. I ride with bright lights. Front and rear. I hear a lot of talk about bicycle lights are annoying!! On the contrary, I think bright lights in the front and rear are preventive measures. Getting hit on a bicycle and going down, IMO is way worst than any other type accident.
Again, hope the cyclist a speedy recovery..

Maybe he wanted to go home first so the alcohol could wear off. Had something like that happen in my neighborhood a few months back. 2Am dude wrecks 2 cars plus his own. Drives off and we lose him. We found him at daylight with his face all busted up and he claims he wasn't even driving. We saw him after he hit the cars and it was evident he was hammered, or stunned from the impact but at 2 AM c'mon.

I'm always sorry that one of us has to pay a price to remind us all that we always, ALWAYS need to be at the top of our game while on the saddle. When I'm riding to work in the morning, I often wonder how anyone can ride responsibly and still get hit. Then I hear about an experienced rider who gets rear-ended while riding the same route he's been traveling for years and years. I guess we're really not as much in control as we like to think.
Speedy recovery, Jim. Stay alert and safe, everyone else!

So sorry hear about yet another cyclist injury. This spring seems to have been particularly rough out there.

I will try and keep the thread updated (read: edited) if I hear any news from Jim or his family. He is scheduled for a tuesday operation so hopefully some time later in the week I will get a chance to see him.
On a lighter side:
Oh and for those who were wondering about a new bike, he told me that his LBS was recently trying to get him on a NEW Roubaix......

Tell Jim, that there is a 72 year old bicycle rider on the forum that said the " Roubaix" is the CHIT!!! Tell him he will be hated if he gets one before me. And if he gets the Red, White and Black one, he will be double hated!!

oh this is horrible. Jim is the nicest guy and probably one of the safest riders out there. I assume he is still at Norwood Hospital, or has he been transfered? I want to go say hello if he can accept visitors.
here's hoping the police lock up the moron who rammed him - see that windshield?
(also - much, much, much less important but that Bridgestone was a beautiful machine)

First, I hope Jim has a speedy recovery. Sounds like a lot of broken bones. I am amazed that one could survive such a crash. The damage to the windshield is shocking. The bike looks even worse.
The video clip talks about how Jim had bright clothing and a light. I'll assume he was obeying traffic laws. The police say that the driver turned himself in the following morning after saying that he "might have hit something". No kidding. Your windshield is smashed. I really do not understand how some people can look at themselves in the mirror each day.

the driver must be a low-intelligence, low-integrity human being. he (yes I'll assume a 'he') probably panicked, then figured he could get away with it, and finally realized the next morning that the penalty might be slightly less severe if he confessed.
I'm really freaked by this whole thing because I live maybe a mile or two north of where this impact happened and have ridden that stretch several times (though my own commute is northward from Westwood). Jim is one of the safest riders I have met, and I'm sure he was lit up like a Christmas tree.
the very sad thing is that Jim usually bikes to Norwood from Boston and then takes the train home (otherwise it's 30m RT). from what I can gather this lowlife assaulted him on his ride home.
please let us know when they ID the driver
