Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"Unimportant", until you realize you're deaf - all because you didn't wear earplugs.

For many, their hearing is quite important. If this sort of noise is a problem, you can't get an easier, less expensive, more effective or simple solution, than 50 pairs of earplugs for a tenner.

Try a helmet cover. There's probably one out there that fits snugly enough to be aero (maybe even improve aerodynamics a bit) yet still allow head heat and vapor to escape. It'll also cut down on turbulence from the vents. With cooler weather approaching it's a good time to experiment.

Wind noise is unavoidable with vented helmets. When I mount my video camera on the helmets the bottom mounted mic picks up mostly wind noise from helmet turbulence. Whenever I tip my head downward the noise quiets and I pick up mostly ambient sound.

If I mount it on the handlebar it's much quieter -- varies depending on proximity to cables and other stuff that produces turbulence.

Heck, I might try the cover trick myself for the winter. Both my helmets kick up a lot of turbulence. I've already lost a lot of high frequency in my left ear, although that's mostly due to age and noise from military training, even with hearing protection. Sometimes I have to turn my head a bit to hear some things clearly.

For those with smaller ear canals, the blue xtreme protection plugs are more comfortable. I've used both (in an office), not sure i would want that level of reduction on the street.

cyclingtips did an interesting article on wind noise while cycling.
Apparently, the db is amazingly loud and with the lengthy duration, hearing loss could become a factor.
they discuss quiet helmet options as well

Even the noisiest helmet will not make enough noise to damage your hearing.

I suppose technically it's wind noise, not something caused by the helmet. But the noise will damage your hearing.

You may find this article interesting. https://cyclingtips.com/2017/08/list...-hearing-loss/
