Three things make them great:
Hubs, build quality and strength. Shimano uses some wicked spokes with a lot of tension. The hubs use the same hard-to-kill bearings as the usual Dura-Ace hub. They are built by a person who knows what they are doing, because they have extremely even spoke tension are never more than a few tenths of a millimetre out of true or round when you pull them out of the box.
They are also very aero for a low profile wheel, but since you plan on training on them, that doesn't matter.

I realize different people can afford different things, but why spend $1200 on a set of training wheels? *****, but yourself another PT hub and get that built into something so you don't have to use the Zipp if you want power numbers.

I have the 7801SL. I like the DA hubs a lot, but have no experience with the 7850 rims.
BTW, Pcad, you can usually find 7801sl's on ebay or Craigslist for less than $400. As someone else mentioned, the 7850s, while cool, are a bit expensive for a training wheel.

there is an advisory/recall out on the 7850 wheels, the spoke plugs are apparently not so hot and give a greater chance of the spokes puncturing the tube (or even worse the tubie)

Why don't you buy some Ultegra/Open Pros for training wheels and spend the extra $'s on something else?

I'd recommend dura ace hubs (because you love shimano) and velocity aerohead rims, 32 hole rear 2x and 28 up front radial. The off-center rear aerohead is builds an extremely durable wheel and they don't have the boxy look of kinlins. Plus, you have many color options for the self hating OCP side of your twisted personality.
Save the fancy stuff for race day and beat the hell out of your training wheels. If you ever feel inclined, you can even true them yourself with normal tools.

I bloody love my WH 7850 C24 CL wheels, not had them long but they ooze shimano loveliness.
They will be great with my new 7900 I'm getting as a reward to myself for passing my Inspector's exams

Pcad, get the shimanos. You'll be amazed at the quality for the price. The ride is buttery smooth, quick accelerating, the hubs run beautifully and are mega quiet.
They look the tops too!
There were supposed issues with punctures in the early run which has been remedied.
You won't regret it!
