Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

32h wheels, traditional frame...I approve.

Are you using down tube shifters for retro-grouchy reasons, or just looking for something different?

Also, I think it would look better outside. Ligthing and all the rest.

Wow, great chrome. Even on the pump, I'm impressed. Classy ride you've got there.

Don't touch the downtube shifters. I mean, yes use them, but don't sell out for Ergo/STI. Leave that for another bike.

That is a beautiful bike. I expect you'll get plenty of positive attention when you are out riding around on that one. Wow!

I wanted something other than the average Tiagra/105 equipped Specialized that my LBS was tempting me with here. I've seen some nice bikes in the area, but nothing that stands out for less than 2-3 grand. (full DA equipped Tarmac, some kind of red DeRosa, etc).

I feel like I spent a horrendous amount of money on it, but I compare it to modern bikes with mostly Ultegra parts and I think I got a bargain. By the time I buy new pedals, I'll have about $1200 in the build. The downtube shifters were not only for cost savings (STIs are $$$!!!), but also for "something different". It's a modernized classic. Brand new downtube shifters, Ultegra 6500, and a 9spd cassette on a classic frame.

I took the pic at night. I could have taken the pic outside, but it would have looked like a black rectangle.

Yeah, it's like "Wow, that's really retro!!!"

I'm not familiar with the different types of tubing, but the sticker on the seattube says "Columbus SLX". All I know is it's steel and fairly light. A bathroom scale seems to indicate it's between 19 and 20lbs all built up.

I was told it was mid 1990s. Seller said the dropouts measured 130mm, but I measured them narrower - likely it got compressed in shipping though. I may follow the instructions on Sheldon Brown's page on flexing it out a bit so it's easier to install and remove the rear wheel.

Overall I'm quite happy with it. Seems to fit me well, tho I am still making minor adjustments. Driveline has been silky smooth and shifting amazingly well. But there is this nagging problem when on the big ring and one of the bigger 4-5 cogs - the chain tends to ride up on the chainring teeth like it's going to shift to the small ring by itself, then it just drops back onto the big ring. Seems the only way to stop that is to push the front derailleur out til it's rubbing the chain in such a situation.

Oh, and thanks for the comments.

Also need to find more appropriate clothing. I'm an MTBer turning to road to keep me in shape. My typical biking apparel currently consists of some thin but super baggy walmart shorts (hey, they're comfortable...) and whatever tshirt I've got that has the most "speed holes" in it. Should invade my LBS and pick up something better.

Nice bike. I did the same thing. I found a 1984 Ciocc CLX 374 (looks like yours but in brown). Here is the
thread that describes my upgrade.

And here is the before picture.

And here is the after picture.

It sure is fun to ride.

Hey, that's a R-E-A-L Ciocc! Not a post-sell-out, re-branded, made-by-some-other-factory Ciocc.

Well done. Now get some pedals!

I had one in the 1980s. Now it's owned by a friend in Athens Ohio.

I knew there'd been a sellout at some point, just wasn't sure when it was or whether mine was pre- or post-sellout.

My first 'real' road bike was an '89 CIOCC, Columbus SL tubing with Ultegra. I loved that bike and it's one of three bikes I've owned that I really regret letting go of. That's sweet ride you've got hang on to her!

I've got some ideas about buying an older columbus tubing frame and putting on some modern components..a retrorestoration.

Imagine that Ciocc with some carbon bits and Zipp 404s.

So when did Ciocc 'sell out'? And who makes their bikes now?
