Good use for a golf course

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What a very dumb comment. I love golf and I'm in pretty damn good shape.

Actually, I was fairly good at golf when I tried it. I just couldn't stand it.

I don't care how you classify golf (sport, recreation, whatever...), it makes no difference to me. Some people think only children ride bikes, and that's cool, too. If you need others' approval of your activities, then it doesn't say much about your conviction. I've dealt with people who were fairly opinionated about cycling and I couldn't have cared less. If I wanted to justify my activites based on others' opinions, I'd go back to high school. Although, in my last job, I took a lot abuse for not going out with the boss to play golf on weekends. I did it once, and at the end, I told the boss thanks for wasting my day that could have been spent cycling (after I had fought him for months about going out with him). Don't think cycling is a sport? Cool, don't watch it. DOn't think golf is a sport? Whatever, I won't buy you golf shirts for Christmas.

Really.

The reason that the general public "distains us" is because some guy claims to have ridden his road bike on a golf green.

That's like saying motorists disrespect pedestrians because some kid left muddy footprints in their garden.

At least he didn't try to set up a crummy straw man argument.

Outstanding post and I concur completely. Live and let live when it comes to selection of sport.

I could care less about golf. I would even go so far as to say I am anti-golf. But if something doesn't belong to you, don't f**k with it. If you disagree you are a failure as a human being.

Be careful if it's a municipal owned course as opposed to private property. If caught, you'll do time. There was a big deal with a local course where someone poured gas on a tee box and lit it on fire. This was just a tee box, not a green.

In other words, grow up.

Except golf. I think that's what all this fanboi ranting is proving.

If you can even call it a sport.

I know why people don't like golf here, it is too difficult to maintain 2 expensive hobbies. Wives would never allow it.

I enjoy running barefoot on golf courses. They're generally smooth and rock free.

You can't possible that juvenile, that's equatable to someone spraying graffiti on your garage door. I have played golf for many years & there is not enough cardio in it, although carrying your clubs around a very hilly course is a bit of a workout if it's not too crowded. I had to take up biking, running, & swimming or I would remain a tub of lard, but none of those are as fun as golf.

I agree. It's a great challenge of skill and mental concentration, but unless you're an elderly cardiac patient it's not what you'd call strenuous exercise.

Calories burnt playing golf

Now this if for a person who carries their clubs:

130lbs 155lbs 190lbs
325 387 474 Golf, carrying clubs

(This info can be verified through various web sites but I found it here https://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist.htm)

You would say an average round of 18 takes anywhere from 4-5 hours depending on how you play. Some folks are burning close to 2000 calories during that round. It seems to me as if this a workout or "stay in shape" as you will. The caveat to this is that said person has to carry their clubs.

I'm sure if you paid a park 35-70 dollars to use their facilities for 5-6 hours that their would be plenty of running and riding parks throughout the country. The fact of the matter is that since most all parks are public facilites that are built and kept up with tax payer money their will never be such a park

To the OP - do you already know how to trackstand? If not, a flat area like a golf green is not the best place to learn. Trackstanding is much easier on an incline.

Also, because roads are crowned, you can find natural inclines at stoplights all over the place.

This website helped me to learn to trackstand - https://www.teamestrogen.com/articles/asa_trackstand.asp
