Kennesaw Commuter Killed & Seen Him Before
This is a tragic loss to bike commuter community. I have seen this guy before. He'd usually ride a darkish green MTB with flowers attached on his handle bar. He never wore helmet (red baseball cap instead) whenever saw him at Kennesaw Due West/Cobb 41 intersection (see picture).
This is the article of the accident:

They caught the driver:

I kind of feel bad myself because I bumped to him almost twice a week at the intersection (see picture) and seldom said hi to him.
Folks, be nice and remember to say hi to commuter you encounter frequently.

Failure to report? They didn't mention leaving the scene of an accident, which is also a felony. Seems like they have him on three felony counts at least.
Another case where really, the guy was doing nothing wrong, except maybe not having sufficient active lighting. Thinking about stuff like this happening made me buy a Dinotte taillight a few weeks ago. Be safe, people.

I work in the area and I have seen the guy in the above picture frequently and I think that is the guy that got hit. Thats the corner of Cherokee and Mainstreet. The building behind him is where "The General" is. If you spin the picture facing down the street and go a block down there is a building with a blue awning around it. Thats the Whistle stop cafe. I eat there sometimes. He came in there from time to time as well. I remember almost falling over his bike leaned next to the front door one day.

I have read a couple different stories and one of the stores said that he was not actually in the roadway when hit. He was in what sounded like a Gore. I think this guy rode the side walks a lot and the sensible place to cross to get to the side walks is right through that gore.
This should be where he was hit.

I have a bike I'd donate to be a Ghost bike. Its a old Huffy road bike but I have a set of MTB bars I could put on it. I have a welder and I can weld the axles to the frame and weld a chain to the seat post to make it harder to remove and vandalize. That stop sign in the gore looks like the perfect spot. I go through that intersection a fair amount. I'll go this week and scope it out.
Anybody able to make a nice large plaque that can be read easily for it?
Anybody local want to help place it?

Grim,
Thanks for the link. I think that looks like him. In Kennesaw, commuters are very few, used to be me, this guy & one dude I met once with a Litespeed roadie. I met this Litespeed guy at the same intersection (Kenn/Cobb41) and had a short conversation with him on his commute to work on weekends and I was on my way to Bally Fitness on Prado Lane (behind Ross on Barrett Pkwy). Anyways, I ended up smoking this guy because he cut in front of me at the intersection.
Back to the main subject, I contacted Shell gas station he worked at and the gas attendant told he had only one survivor, a sister from Wisconsin. The gas attendant said his sister is coming this weekend to get his belongings back to Wisconsin. I'll PM you his relative info once I find out more from Shell.
Shell Gas Station (A) he worked at:

I was thinking sending a cashier check to his sister.
Yes, I remember Whistle cafe. I ate there once after getting my adjustments from next door Kennesaw Chiropractor. The model train running around on top of the wall was pretty cool. Every 1000 miles I would get some good bone cracking from Kenn Chiro.

I really wish stories like this would get greater attention in the media and used as examples. It is easy to do something when driving that is completely unintentional but that could easily be avoided if the driver was paying attention or otherwise abiding by the law. I think we (as a society) really need to start putting some serious fear into driving. It's the operation of a deadly weapon and too many pedestrians and cyclists are killed each year simply because drivers don't give their full attention to the serious task of driving. Cell phone use should be illegal while driving. Period. Driving while drinking should result in a mandatory 10-year loss of license. Period. Every day I see people doing plain old stupid things while driving - eating, playing with their iPOD, texting, reading the morning paper, applying make up...the list goes on. These are the behaviors that result in people getting killed and seriously injured.
