I regularily get to 49-52mph on a nearby hill. It's fairly short and a straight shot down. A bit nerve racking with traffic right behind me.

IRL Cars go that fast, with 800+ HP and crazy low drag numbers. Troy Bayliss hit 201 a few years back on an Aprillia 1000V motorcycle at Sugo Japan, but a 70's muscle car... no way, unless it was modded so much, its not a 70's muscle car. You could put 1000 HP in one, and without the right aerodynamics, you will never get to 200 etc.. Plus they Handle like shopping carts, so turning that kind of time on a speedway? Nuts.
I've seen 189 indicated, going into the first turn @ roebling road raceway when I raced Heavyweight Superbike/Supersport. I was running a 2003 GSXR 1000 in the Open class, only mods were filter, exhaust, re mapped injection, and race fuel. My Buddy Wayne can get to an idicated 191, there is some speedometer error, and wheel slippage etc, but believe me, Its as fast as you ever want to go. We could get similair numbers running the back straight at Road Atlanta, but your downhill run ends in a couple of 90 degree corners that can be taken at about 55-60mph max If I remember correctly. You better respect your braking markers, one trip through the gravel trap on my head was enough for me.

I also like to mountian bike. What really improves my handling skills in dodging parked cars in parking lots and 8 foot complete turn arounds in culdisacs in pedal restrants.

Could it be 218 km/h, and not 218 mph?
Sounds a lot more reasonable...

55.4 mph in '03 coming off a pass in Colorado. Perfect conditions - smooth road, high altitude, no wind, and I rememberd to zip up my jersey (anything flapping at those speeds will slow you down!).
As for the folks worried about hitting a rock at 40+...I suppose that would be a bad thing, but I don't think it's very likely if you pay attention and don't tense up. If you're tense, and focus on the rock, you're going to eat sh*t. Instead, you have to stay loose and be comfortable manuevering. It's really not that hard to swerve the bike a foot or so from side to side so if you see a rock or a pothole coming up.
You can also bunny hop a road bike to avoid obstacles. I don't like getting passed on downhills, but one time a guy with aerobars passed me doing 45+ on a long straight downhill. I was in a full tuck but the guy was beginning to pull away no matter how hard I tried to keep up. Suddenly, I saw him sit up and grab his brakes, because a cattle guard was coming up. I bunny-hopped it at about 45, and never saw him again.
I'm old enough to know better I suppose (51 YO), but whenever the road goes downhill, I get into a weird intensely peaceful zone and just let the bike flow as fast as it wants to go...someday, it might bite me in the butt, but until then, I'll be the guy in the aero tuck with a big grin on his face, shouting "On your left!"

You never really know how fast you're going till you crash. It's simply amazing how far you actually slide when you step off going over the century mark. It's even more amazing how hard things are (walls, tires) when you run into them.

No kidding, my last crash was at around 120 or so, I actually lowsided after losing the rear!?! Most violent thing that has ever happned to me. My most memorable one? about the same speed, but I was sliding on my back through wet grass for what seemed like a minute, while the whole time I was watching my bike flipping end over end above me, with pieces flying off like it got hit by a bomb..
Man, when you think about the money spent for that hobby.... Some of my Buddies complain about Golf being expensive.. HAHAHAA< I was dropping $500 a weekend just for entry fees and tires, and thats with no crashing!!

58.3 mph descending the Pali Highway (Windward side) in Hawaii. Used to ride that twice a day, then I got married. Now, I'm riding again, (a lot slower now), and not married (a lot happier now).

And my ride around the velodrome at bloomer park in MI was just as cool as my first track day/race school was on the motorcycle.

I'm lucky I guess, within 20 miles of my house are at least 4 different hills that you can hit 50+ on.
53.4mph on Lotus Grade (10%)
Pinarello Prince SL with K SSLs (since wrecked)
52.4mph
Specialized Sirrus Pro with K SSLs last week on a new hill we found in Rocklin (Park Dr. in Whitney Oaks subdivision), 14% grade. He, he, 50 with a flat bar...

51.8mph on a 1986 Trek 560 down a wicked hill! Cranked it up as fast as I could pedal and hung on!
49.0mph on a Burley Tandem, left turn out of my driveway, without pedaling! I have scars on my @$$ from where my wife dug her thumbnails after her requests to slow down didn’t receive much attention… Only did it once! She tore my shorts! It sucked living on the top of that hill at the end of a ride!!! I walked it more than I care to admit.
Both of these happened out in the Olympic Peninsula, Washington

My speedo reported something crazy like 68mph but I think it was due to me crashing rather than actually travelling that quickly.
Bike: Max MTB modded
Route: my road at home
Cause of accident: some dosey dude parking his car right in the middle of the road on a blind bend
Injuries: plenty of scrapes, cuts and bruises - I was really lucky.

39.2mph last week, drafting a box truck. This was all purely by accident, If I had known what was happening earlier I would've pedaled a lot harder.
