For newbies or recreational riders, the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign has a few rides each month, along with Effective Cycling (Bike Ed) classes.

Is there any good mountain biking inside the perimeter? I've been pondering getting a mountain bike, but I just didn't want to drive a long ways to get to the trails. I like being able to ride right out my door for the decatur road rides.

Beats me. I mostly ride on the roads but I have a good friend who is heavy into mountain biking. Seems to me that he likes to go for long drives to places to ride. I'll send him an email though. I suspect he knows of places inside the perimeter to ride. He's known every trail I've "discovered."

There's a bit of good gravel roading, not real single track though. There used to be some great single track mountain biking near Emory but the neighborhoods started to complain about noise, trash, and trespassing. There are several ridable trails if you're sneaky enough. PM me if you want some more specific info.

[edit]: The routes that I'm thinking about are public property and legal. Just difficult to find at times.

there will be some masochists out there, but not many...

I would give it a shot if it were warmer, but as it is, I'm gonna enjoy a nice fire and some hot cocoa and maybe an episode or two from the Lost season 2 DVD set

It's not so bad once you get used to it.

according to weather.com, the rain is supposed to stop between 6pm & 7pm...there might be a fair number of people that end up biking tonight. I might actually take my touring bike for a slow ride on the app & tap short route.

I'm probably going to end up going tonight if anyone else feels like a quick ride in the rain

I am one of the ride leaders for the Tuesday Melton's ride, so I would love to see ya'll there anytime. We start at 6:30 every Tuesday evening (some even in the rain). Just remember that since this is a SBL sponsored ride helmets are required.

You could bring your "Ancient Acura Integra".

I used to ride some over at the Chatahoochie park at 75 & 285, literally 10 ft outside the perimeter. There is the gravel loop and then on the back side of the loop, there was a singletrack trail system that you could do. It was technically a hiking trail, but you could bike it during lower traffic times. They may have started cracking down on it by now, as this was 10 yrs ago.

Does anyone have any additional info on this event?

The Governor's Office Of Highway Safety is staging a Share The Road press event this Thursday morning in downtown Atlanta. Almost every roadway user from 18-wheeler to pedestrian will be represented. One part of the event is a ceremonial race -- a bicycle against a NASCAR car. It would be best to have the cyclist part played by an active racing cyclist in full team kit (with helmet of course) and on their race bike. The cyclist is supposed to win... just like the NASCAR vs SHARE THE ROAD specialty license plates race. If you fit the bill, want to do it, and can be commit to being in downtown Atlanta from 9:30 to 11:30AM this Thursday, October 19, please send an e-mail to: GeorgiaBikesHQ@GeorgiaBikes.org

MT, I haven't heard anything about that. Sounds interesting, though. A bike should beat a stock car no sweat downtown.

Hi Atlanta... I might be visiting for a couple weeks over the holidays. Two questions:

1) Any recommendations on a bike rental? It doesn't have to be super high end, but it would be nice to use the occasion to test ride a new brand I might consider in the future.

2) Any local club rides you can recommend?

Thanks,
Vance

hey man. www.bikesbl.org has a ton of good rides depending on how fast you want to go.

if you're a racer, there is an airport ride on Sunday, and a ride in Tucker on Saturday for brisk base miles. There is a practice crit(very fast) in Marietta, but I'm not sure if it goes on during the winter. actually it looks like it doesn't

www.sadlebred.com has a lot of other great rides.

let me know what kind of rides you're looking for and I can help you out. Also what part of town?

edit: not sure about the bike rental...I think you can rent bikes at the silver comet depot on the silver comet. If you're an exceptionally tall guy, I may be able to hook you up with a bike.

Thanks Bran... those are exactly the kind of rides I'm looking for. Temperature will be in the 80's, right? LOL. I will definitely pack my cold weather gear. I'll be staying in Buckhead, but should have use of a car the whole time.

What are some of the better bike shops in town? Maybe I'll ring them up and see what they have in the way of a demos they might be willing to rent.

around buckhead and the intown area....ones off the top of my head, peachtree bikes(buckhead), outback bikes, bike south, bicycle link(buckhead), roswell bikes(further north, but probably my favorite shop)...there are others though.
