Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This one is funny yet sad but true.

"bubba -- (Southern USA) A rude driver, usually in a pickup truck. Can also be used to describe probability of encounter, i.e., "That loop is about a 2 bubba ride." When encountering a bubba, the best response is to smile and wave - that irritates them more than any other response without increasing the os they will come back and make a road pizza out of you... considering I live in TN, I couldn't agree more... though I will admit that a decent portion of our bubbas aren't terribly aggressive. They just honk once as they drive by and that's about the end of it. Usually the ones that yell are the teenage kids.

The next to last definition made me laugh..

yard-sale -- An extreme biff; stuff scattered about like a yard sale

and I'm sure a lot of you guys here have used this one:
"I'm at the end of a hard training session." -- What you say when an MTB rips past you on a hill.

Bikes: Expensive ones that I ride slowly

It's too late for me to read all of that "dictionary", but I printed it up and it'll be on my tackboard at work --- good stuff.

That would be the auto club that comes when you need a tow.

Its the American Automobile Association, if you pay to be a member, you get free short range towing when your car breaks down.

Edit, I was beat to the chase....

Yep, and when you say it, it's pronounced, "Triple A".

"All show and no go": my version is "ten cent rider on a ten dollar bike". Don't ever, EVER want to be that guy.

I’m offended. What does this mean?

Amateur mark -- Grease mark on the leg (like a Cat. 5 tattoo or a sprocket bite.)

So yeah, I have grease marks all over my right leg when I ride. But I can leave many of those wannabe racers in their pro kits admiring my Camelback. So who’s the amateur now?! Grrrr!

Ditto... I'm so light I get totally dusted by nearly anyone on a downhill. I just have no mass behind me.

I love this one:
Balls are in the purse - When your buddy either won't ride with you or he is exceptionally weak and timid. "Get your balls back from your girlfriends purse!" "You must have left your balls in your purse!".

They didn't use "balls to the wall", a commonly heard phrase with a group I once rode with. At every ride it was "what do y'all want to do" and someone would inevitably answer, "balls to the wall!" And then we'd ride.

Yeah, I noticed that it wasn't on there, but I guess it wasn't commonly used by the person who posted it or any of his friends?

I'm sure Ben Cousins could tell us all about this one:

compound disappearing hill -- A hill where no matter how long you climb, you're never more than half the way up.

interval -- What you do when a dog is chasing you.

targets -- Commuter cyclists, those who don't wear cycle shorts and travel at about half your speed.

whiner -- Someone who fights the commissars over 19th place.

I'm surprised that term is listed as "roadie slang." I always thought of it as a skiing term. How do you do a yard sale on a road bike?

I can see it being more sensible as a skiing term... but I suppose it's possible on a road bike... if your jersey pockets are full of stuff plus you're wearing a helmet and sunglasses... all the stuff could come out of your pockets and your sunglasses could go flying somewhere?

I wondered WTH "riding bay" means - they kept mentioning that but wouldn't define it. Then I twigged that someone had gone through and removed all the "dl"s - so handlebar is hanebar, saddle is sade, badly is bay. Weird and confusing.
