Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? These are some of the most beautiful frames I have seen. The polished lugs are sweet. I only wish I could afford one.

yeah, but what bag will make me not look like a posenger? will putting a brake on this bike make me less hardcore? what gear ratio do I need to use to not be a hipster?

seriously, while I love the beauty of an old/oldstyled frame, I'm still waiting for some amazing inovations in frames. at what point will people move beyond two triangles? maybe I'm just being an ass....

okay, now this is me being sincerely curious, not just a jerk...what needs innovating? what is it about traditional frames that leaves you wanting more? is it just a neophilic thing, or is there a reason to improve on the world standard?

it's mostly my inventor side screaming in my head "CHANGE IT CHANGE IT CHANGE IT!" also my life revolves around "improvements," as that is all the audio/video world is, from the gramaphone, we are now recording music onto items the size of a lighter and transporting it through wires that are sometimes smaller than a single hair. but yeah, two different worlds.

I would have to start with, yes, you are being an ass. There have been amazing innovations in cycling, if thats what you want to call a recumbent, or any of a million other ideas like suspension forks/frames and hydraulic braking.

Hell, GT put triple triangle frames into mass production in the 80's, I have no idea who "came up" with the idea, or did it first.....but this is old news.

but all in all it's still the same. moving the point of attatchment for the rear triangle is hardly an inovation.

I guess what I'm getting at is, why are people shelling out all this cash for something that is basically no better than a bike 1/3 the cost? now if there was something drastically different that made it a more efficent machine, then sure, but all in all it's still two triangles.

You mean something like ?

I hear he was a popular fellow.

When Obree came to defend his pursuit title, the officials said his bicycle was illegal on account of the seat. Obree borrowed a legal one and was allowed to start. After his qualifying run, the judges decided that it was his position on the bike that was illegal, and sent him home.

The recumbent has been around for 75 years, we have monocoque frames, old and new. There have been folding bikes for a whole long time and even Pedersens have been with us about as long as the safety bike itself.

In short, there has been no shortage of variations to the basic double diamond safety bike. They're all nearly as old as it is. None seem to have the same level of general utility.

You obviously don't get it then. I could cover a wall with a $5 movie poster just as easy as I could hang an original painting. Yes, the wall gets covered, one version is just more appealing than the other.(In the opinion of who owns the wall.) It's not that an expensive custom bike is better/faster/lighter/whatever. It's an appreciation of someone's skill and artistic ability blended with the functional aspect of a bicycle. Rideable art. Or so it was with me. Never intended to be a messenger. In no way claim to be the fastest rider. Just a guy who likes great craftsmanship and likes to ride. YMMV.

Even longer than that - about 105 years if you go back to the earliest designs:
