Speedplay pedal questions X2 vs Zero
I am looking at a pair of Speedplay pedals. I demoed a pair for a bit last summer to try and help some foot problems and liked them but they didn't make the foot issues go away. In hindsight they did help with some slight knee soreness after a long ride so I am thinking of making the plunge.
I rode the X2s. Is there a big justification to go with Zeros vs. the X family if I didn't mind the float.
Stainless vs. Chromemoly spindles. Is there a strength difference? I am not a thin guy (200+lbs) so trimming a couple of grams off the bike isn't that important. Should I be concerned about the strength of one pedal vs. the other (I realize I should stay off the Ti stuff).
Thanks

I have the Zeros and love them. I don't like a lot of float though. If you read the Speedplay sight they say studies show that float doesn't affect performance so if you like a lot of float then go with the X. As far as Stainless vs. Chrome I don't think it matters that much. I have the Team CSC Stainless and love them but another guy I ride with has the chrome and he likes his just the same. I only got the Team CSC because I got a good discount from the shop on them and the red matches the bike - https://www.jamey.us/images/roadbike/Pic1.jpg - better.
Be sure to use the DRY lubricant they suggest on the cleat springs and the plate. It helps a lot for clipping in and out and will prolong the life of the cleat mechanism.

I'm very interested between the "feel" and "performance" difference between the X2's and the zero's. I've ridden the X2's for several years and have no complaints but I recently tried out some Look A5.1 and really like the larger and more secure platform. However, I did not like the fact I had to raise the saddle an inch, or that they were single sided entry, or that they started squeaking after only 60 miles. I'm wondering if the Zero's will give a similar feel to the Look's with the adjustable float**********??

The only real advantage I noticed when switching from X's to Zeros was that the Zeros seemed to engage more solidy. My shoes used to "rock" on the Xs in the pronate/supinate direction, probably because of the thin, round section c-clip. The Zeros have a square section c-clip, and I feel more solidly connected to the pedal. It does make them a tiny bit harder to snap into, but as long as you keep the clip lubed and don't over-tighten the screws, you should be good to go.
I know there are other differences between the pedals, but that was the main one for me, performance-wise.

i ride on X/1's... i chose them cuz i had been riding on X/5's on my old bike and like the unlimited float.. i chose X/1's over X/2's for the new bike.. stictly based on color! i wanted black and silver.. so i got the lighter, prettier titanium pedals
hubby has zeros on his road bike.. stainless steel on the old one and titanium on the new carbon bike... he prefers less float and likes his zeros....
just chose if you want a lot of float.. or limited/adjustable float.. then go from there!

The X-5 Chrome-moly pedals will rust. I can't see why anyone would choose that pedal. I myself just bought the X-2 Stainless ones. The color of the pedals makes them look old and used but I couldnt justify the price difference to get the Titanium ones.

as far as rust.. depends on where you live... my dolce has chrome-moly.. not a spec of rust.. but then.. i live in the desert.. VERY dry!

My 4 year old X5's are starting to rust. They also have a crummy system for seating the dust cap screws - they're easy to strip. I lost one and by the time I noticed it was missing, it had done some damage to the bearings. I ended up replacing it with a screw with a coarser thread.
I'll be replacing them with X1's this year. (It would be nice to find them on sale, but so far no dice).
